Job Description

The Associate Controller, under general direction, is responsible for planning, directing, leading, evaluation and reviewing major accounting and financial areas. Coordinates financial shared services to ensure successful operations, internal controls and communications. Facilitates the enhancement of the decentralized accounting process. Serves on state, university, and system-wide committees.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, directs, leads, evaluates, and reviews major accounting and financial service areas including supervision and budget authority.

  • Coordinates financial and shared services to assure successful operations, internal controls, and communications.

  • Facilitates the enhancement of the decentralized accounting process.

  • Develops management report standards for activities. Provides information and reporting to management as requested and needed to make sound financial decisions.

  • Works with departments to synchronize official accounting records with actual activities in the most effective and efficient way.

  • Coordinate and supervise staff with the compilation, review, completion, and distribution of the Annual Financial Report (AFR).

  • Coordinate accounting’s contribution in preparing annual operating budget and reviews.

  • Assures adequacy of internal control and compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and laws, system policies, and regulations and rules.

  • Interprets and applies general accounting and reporting standards established by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Researches and obtains information on new accounting pronouncements and rules which may impact financial statements.

  • Ensures appropriate application of all relevant accounting practices and procedures to include maintaining and updating the account code structure in the general ledger.

  • Provides effective communications and training for areas of responsibility.

  • Assists the Controller with forecasting, allocating, and monitoring the human, physical, and financial resources for assigned areas.

  • Serves as fiscal liaison with departments, the Controller’s Office, and the System Office of Budgets and Accounting. Responds to inquiries.

  • Directs liaison efforts with the System, State Auditor’s Office, and other oversight agencies for financial, reporting, and audit matters.

  • Reviews and analyzes potential legislation and the fiscal impact to the university. Interprets and directs implementation of requirements resulting from new legislation and/or directives from the State’s oversight agencies.

  • Serves on state, university, and system-wide committees.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, related field that includes accounting coursework.

  • Eight years of related experience.

  • One year of supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Skill in analyzing, interpreting, and reporting complex financial data, and providing recommendations.

  • Strong presentation, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to work with auditors to resolve issues or implement changes to improve work efficiency and internal controls.

  • Ability to direct multifunction work teams.
