Job Description:

The Salt Lake City Council Office is seeking a motivated Social Media Intern with a background in social media marketing and bilingual proficiency (Spanish preferred) to help improve communication with Salt Lake City residents via various social media platforms. Incumbents may deal with confidential information, which is expected to be maintained as confidential and shared only on a need-to-know basis with city employees and elsewhere when authorized by the intern’s city supervisor.

This is a hybrid position requiring a minimum of 20 weekly work hours with at least two days in the office and the remainder remote. We are flexible and open to identifying work hours around school schedules.

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Director of Public Relations, the Social Media Intern supports the Council’s communications team in enhancing online engagement with residents, businesses, and employees. This includes social media content creation, planning, translation and scheduling, social listening, and community engagement. Strong accountability, task management and communication skills are essential. An individual with Spanish speaking, reading and writing skills is preferred for this internship.

Responsibilities:

The Social Media Intern will support the work of other Communication Staff members, and assist with:

  • Developing and executing social media strategies for platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, TikTok, Nextdoor, LinkedIn, Threads, and others.

  • Creating, planning and publishing high-quality, engaging content (e.g., text, video, images) focused on local government and policymaking with attention to our brand voice.

  • Monitor social media channels for comments, messages, and mentions; engage with followers in a timely and professional manner.

  • Tracking on social media metrics and suggest improvements.

  • Event photography and videography.

  • Basic graphic design requests as needed.

  • Collaborating with internal teams to align social media efforts with broader marketing campaigns and initiatives.

  • Conducting research on industry trends, marketing activity, and audience preferences to optimize our social media efforts.

  • Writing clear and descriptive alt text for images and visuals to ensure accessibility for all audiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Self-starter capable of producing high-quality content with little supervision.

  • Familiarity with social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, TikTok, Nextdoor, LinkedIn, Threads, and others.

  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

  • Basic experience with video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere, CapCut, iMovie, or similar tools).

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask while meeting deadlines.

  • Familiarity with and interest in current local government trends and online marketing practices .

  • Creativity and attention to detail.

  • Comfortable with research and analysis.

  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced team environment.

  • Available to work on Tuesday afternoons and evenings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with social media management tools (e.g., SproutSocial, HootSuite, Buffer, Later).

  • Familiarity with social listening monitoring and community engagement

  • Experience with Canva or other graphic design software.

  • Familiar with project management software.

  • Experience in writing and/or journalism.

  • Proficiency in AP Style.

  • Bilingual in Spanish.

  • Basic understanding of web accessibility standards and best practices

Duration:

Three months with the potential of an extension.
