ARUP Laboratories Laboratory Support Technical Specialist I (MLS/Technologist) in Salt Lake City, Utah

Schedule Monday - Friday (40 hrs/wk)6:30 AM to 3:00 PM

Training Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Primary Purpose:

This position plays a pivotal role in providing essential technical and non-technical support across various operational areas within the Customer Services Division. While it's important to note that this position does not involve any laboratory testing duties, it encompasses tasks such as conducting test research, addressing client inquiries, maintaining the Referral testing database, and facilitating the appropriate handling of Path-On-Call cases and inquiries. Additionally, the Specialist is responsible for meticulously upkeeping licensure records and undertaking other duties as assigned. Central to the role is the ability to comprehend and effectively communicate medical and laboratory terminology, ensuring seamless assistance to both Client Services agents and clients alike. Previous experience in conducting high complexity testing is vital, as it underpins the Specialist's capability to offer informed support across various inquiries and technical matters. Flexibility is paramount, as the Specialist must be available to work flexible hours and be on call to address urgent matters promptly. By leveraging technical proficiency, organizational skills, and a commitment to service excellence, the Laboratory Support Technical Specialist contributes significantly to upholding operational efficiency and client satisfaction within the division.

Essential Functions:

Multitask effectively to manage and prioritize multiple projects, responsibilities, and inquiries while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor.

Collaborate as needed with other areas and departments within the company to ensure smooth and efficient operations, fostering a cohesive and integrated approach to achieving organizational goals.

Address direct and indirect client inquiries promptly and accurately, ensuring high levels of client satisfaction while fostering communication and exhibiting exceptional customer service in all professional interactions.

Promote and practice effective information management by taking ownership of cases, prioritizing them appropriately, and ensuring thorough documentation and follow-up to enhance customer satisfaction.

Provide education, guidance, and resolution to Client Services agents regarding available resources and laboratory testing information to enhance their understanding and utilization effectively.

Monitor the queue and prioritize Path-On-Call cases and inquiries, accordingly, ensuring efficient handling by directing them to the correct laboratory, medical director, resident or designee.

Conduct hotline reviews as scheduled and ensure updates to the Referral Testing Database (RTDB) are made promptly in accordance with any changes or updates identified during the review process.

Maintain an up-to-date electronic record of licenses for reference laboratories to ensure regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.

Perform test comparisons and small test matches as needed.

Create and modify custom requisitions for clients.

Prioritize, research and respond to requests for test information, specimen requirements, supplies and fees associated with vendor and internal testing.

Perform onboarding and training for new medical residents, ensuring comprehensive understanding and proficiency in client services procedures and protocols.

Other duties as assigned.

Physical and Other Requirements:

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Effectively communicates with others.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company/departmental policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as making general observations of depth and distance.

Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish colors.

Continuing Education: Continual assessment of current literature and best practices.

Qualifications

Education

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree or better in Biological Sciences

Preferred

  • Master's Degree or better in Biological Sciences

  • PhD or better in Biological Sciences

Licenses & Certifications

Required

  • Applicable ASCP or AAB

Experience

Required

  • MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), or MT (AAB)

  • Doctoral degree in Clinical or Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or in the chemical or biological sciences with two (2) year of post-degree high complexity clinical diagnostic testing experience post Technologist Trainee level

  • Or Master's degree in Clinical or Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or in the chemical or biological sciences with two (2) years of post-degree high complexity clinical diagnostic testing experience post Technologist Trainee level

  • Or Bachelor’s degree in Clinical or Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or in the chemical or biological sciences with two (2) years of post-degree high complexity clinical diagnostic testing experience post Technologist Trainee level

Preferred

  • 4 years: Four years post-degree high complexity clinical diagnostic testing experience post Technologist Trainee level
