Job Summary

The district Horticulturist is responsible for leading district grounds staff in the daily care and maintenance of the grounds around the University of Utah. This role involves a variety of landscape/grounds tasks including: mowing, whipping, planting, pruning, fertilizing, and pest management. The District Horticulturist is considered a critical position and is expected to participate in emergency response, including On-Call Snow Removal.

Responsibilities

1.) Lead and supervise the district grounds staff daily, providing training and guidance on the field.

2.) Develop and implement work schedules and shift assignment sheets for district grounds team.

3.) Participate in on-call snow removal process.

4.) Coordinate and collaborate with other districts and departments to ensure landscape needs are met for Campus events and activities.

5.) Perform routine maintenance of campus landscapes, including mowing, trimming, weeding, and mulching.

6.) Plant and maintain trees, shrubs, flowers, and other vegetation.

7.) Monitor and manage plant health, including pest management.

8.) Safely operate, maintain, and train on horticultural equipment & tools.

9.) Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

10.) Maintain accurate records of horticultural activities and inventory.

11.) Stay up to date on current landscape trends and water wise conservation efforts.

12.) Assist in the implementation of landscape improvement projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Biology, or a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), and two years of experience in horticulture. Strong knowledge and understanding of plant culture and best practices for ornamental and/or native plant care.

Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Preferences

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or Landscape Maintenance, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in horticulture or landscape Maintenance.

  • Strong understanding of plant care, pest management, and horticultural practices.

  • Leadership experience.
