Job Summary

Mentors provide guidance, resources, advice, connections, and support to U of U students. Mentors desire to instill a sense of confidence and community among their mentees. They may assist their mentees with university life through individualized meetings, hosting events with, and/or, maintaining ongoing communication throughout the academic year. Mentee needs will differ, and mentors will provide support as needed.

The College of Architecture + Planning initiated a program for Design Foundation and Pre-major students designed to provide an integrated introduction to the disciplines of architecture, planning, and design. Titled “Design Foundations,” the program helps pre-major students develop cross-disciplinary design-related literacy and skills, and provide a supportive, cohort-based learning environment. In their first year, students will work together in three courses – Design Contexts ( DES 2630), Design Ecologies ( CMP 2010), and Design Foundations Workshop ( ARCH 2630). After their first year, students will explore in greater depth one of the college’s three undergraduate streams of inquiry — architecture, design, or urban ecology.

The Design Foundations Peer Advising Program provides opportunities for incoming first year and transfer students entering the Design Foundations Program to connect with juniors and seniors in each of the CA+P majors. The program is meant to provide additional student support and guidance through experiential knowledge thatour Peer Advisors have attained through their Design Foundations experience. DF Peer Advisors will be housed through the CA+P Student Success Center and will also provide quick advising support to students.

Design Foundations Peer Advisor Program Goals:

  1. Provide new students with a sense of belonging within the College and campus community.

  2. Help facilitate students’ entry into the Architecture, Design, and Urban Ecology majors.

  3. Help improve student retention and graduation rates.

Responsibilities

  1. Help new students with their transition to the University of Utah.

  2. Attend mandatory Peer Advising training sessions and bi-weekly advisor meetings. Peer Advising Training will occur 10/1/24 and 10/3/24.

  3. Peer Advisors are required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week, and 2-3 hours the Peer Advisor must be available to DF students during Peer Advising open office hours.

  4. Announce college activities and events in DF courses.

  5. Support Design Foundation students with DF course work. Commenting on student projects in the draft stage.

  6. Connect students with different resources on campus.

  7. Assist students in learning how to use the databases for library assignments and software for class projects.

  8. Assist in outreach and recruitment events, extracurricular/college events, and university programs such as New Student Orientation.

  9. Provide tours for prospective students and sharing your student experience.

  10. Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Have completed at least one year at the University of Utah by the time position begins

  • Must be in good standing with the University of Utah, both academically and in conduct

  • Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA

  • Shows commitment to campus and community through involvement

Preferences

  • Declared major in College of Architecture + Planning. Must have in-major status in either Architectural Studies, Design, or Urban Ecology.

  • Junior or senior status by Fall 2024. Specify junior and senior by each program. Must have completed one year of in-major coursework.

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

  • Must have completed all 3 Design Foundation classes: ARCH 2630, CMP 2010, and DES 2630.

  • Have a Minimum availability of 10-12 hours per week.

Special Instructions Summary
