Salt Lake Community College's Visual Art & Design Department provides a quality arts education and assists students in achieving their artistic and career goals. In addition to offering associate degrees and certificates in art, the department also provides an opportunity to explore a variety of art media. We prepare individuals to build their professional-looking portfolios for employment and/or transfer to a four-year college or university.

The selected candidate will work as a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in the Visual Art & Design Department's Graphic Design & Communications Specialization. The candidate will teach traditional art and design physical materials courses and digitally based computer lab courses. They will join a progressive department where faculty members are thoughtful individuals, equity-minded practitioners, and knowledgeable visual arts instructors who may utilize various modalities for instructional delivery.

Responsibilities & Duties:

Teaching:

Under general supervision, the faculty member will prepare and teach a combination of course modalities. A positive commitment to teaching excellence and responsibilities will include an ability to create and instruct in the following:

- - Traditional hands-on skills required in the preliminary design process, physical materials, and presentation. - Computer software skills in Adobe's InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. - A variety of delivery modalities and teaching technologies for classes in traditional in-person, face-to-face, hybrid, online, and lab environments.

 

 

The faculty member will teach an average of 15 instructional units per semester (approximately 18 hours of in-class time per week during the Fall and Spring semesters) in the Visual Art & Design Department at Salt Lake Community College. Regular full-time faculty members teach assigned day, evening, and weekend classes in accordance with established guidelines and policies. SLCC faculty participate in advising students, committee assignments, support academic and institutional activities, and other duties as assigned.

Much of the assigned teaching load may consist of introductory, intermediate, and advanced graphic design courses, which require coordination of course curriculum paperwork and adjunct training. Additional duties may include but are not limited to participation in Visual Art & Design program curriculum development, annual program assessments, and periodic program reviews in collaboration with other program faculty.

 

Professional:

- - Become familiar with and abide by all college policies, with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the college. - Maintains professional etiquette in communication with students, staff, faculty, and administrators. - Works closely with department peers and administrators to understand processes and procedures leading to success as a contributing teacher and member of the academic unit. - Maintains necessary education, credentials, and professional skills nd demonstrates teaching competencies consistent with department standards. - Solicits feedback and implements suggestions from students and peers when appropriate. - Expands knowledge in discipline and teaching craft on an ongoing basis. - Promotes professional development of peers/colleagues through recognized professional activities (inservice activities and the presentation of conference papers and/or publications, and other methodologies appropriate to the teaching field), as approved by the department. - Participates in the collegial mentoring relationship, serving as a mentor and/or mentee in the department and college. - Engages in local, state, and/or national professional organizations appropriate to the faculty role. - Serves community partners as content area experts when needed. - Completes required training and participates in professional development. - Other duties as assigned:

Service:

The faculty member will serve their program, department, school, college, and the larger community by attending both general and discipline-specific forums and meetings. Faculty are expected to serve on college and department committees and community committees, engage with the community in multiple roles, and mentor departmental adjunct faculty. The faculty member will also participate in professional development activities that are applicable to their growth as an artist and an educator.
