State of Idaho-Department of Fish and Game-170 Fisheries Technician Rotary Screw Traps (Salmon IMW) in Salmon, Idaho

Job Responsibilities: \ Incumbent will serve as the screw trap technician in IDFGs Lemhi Effectiveness Monitoring Program in Salmon, Idaho. This project monitors fishery response to restoration efforts in the Lemhi River basin to understand the effectiveness of various habitat actions, and help guide future restoration efforts through an adaptive management process. Sampling juvenile anadromous salmonid emigrants is an integral part of monitoring Idahos threatened populations of salmon and steelhead. The incumbent will be one of two technicians who will work in rotating multi-day shifts to operate three rotary screw traps. Incumbent will also help with various other duties listed below and if interested there are opportunties to conduct a research project.

Primary duties include:

  • Operating and maintaining three rotary screw traps
  • Handling, identifying, and PIT-tagging juvenile salmonids (including ESA- listed fish)
  • Collecting biological data (weights, lengths, DNA, scales, etc.)
  • Assisting with data management (recording, organizing, and error checking in multiple databases)
  • Operate and maintain Bull Trout weirs

Other specific duties of this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Collecting physical (discharge, temperature, sediment) data used to prioritize projects
  • Maintaining field equipment and arrays
  • Spawning ground surveys
  • Backpack electrofishing
  • Work independently and with a crew
  • Assisting with regional fisheries management projects throughout the region when needed (gillnetting, snorkeling, raft electrofishing)

Note: Must accommodate a flexible schedule (holidays, weekends, 3-5 nights at the end of the season), be willing to work for 10 consecutive days, willing to stay in travel trailers and/or camp in semi-remote areas, and work in adverse weather conditions. This is an 8 month (benefited) position not to exceed 1385 hours. Housing is not provided.
