Penske Transportation Procurement Specialist in Salinas, California

Position Summary:

Primary responsibilities are procurement of truckload transportation inbound to customer’s manufacturing facilities. Responsible to understand truckload transportation and what market conditions affect cost. Negotiate best costs possible. Responsible for creating and maintaining all SmartSheet and any data analytics coming from SmartSheet. Provide continuous improvement by ensuring high service levels through analytics, performance measurements and training. Candidate must have proven communication and negotiation skills with a strong focus on internal and external customer service to meet business needs.

Position is onsite at our customer location. Monday thru Friday normal business hours. The role is hybrid (Tuesday-Thursday required on site/Monday & Friday remote) however is subject to change based on customer requirements.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Manage all transportation bids for assigned manufacturing plants

  • Manage assigned commercial carriers; ensure they are meeting required metric levels

  • Work closely with Regional Transportation Mangers, plant manufacturing analysts, Penske Carrier Management and Network Design teams, Third party payment providers and Controller’s office

  • Support Truckload Purchasing Team with all SmartSheet data

  • Use transport data and analytics to identify cost opportunities

  • Understand customer requirements and manage carrier’s performance through a rating system

  • Monitor carriers’ performance and support Penske Carrier Management to successfully “coach” deficient carriers back to expected performance

  • Other projects as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of transportation industry experience is preferred

  • High School diploma or equivalent required, Bachelor’s Degree in Logistics, Transportation or related field preferred

  • Prior experience in procurement is preferred/Strong negotiation skills

  • Comfort presenting to audience online, or in-person

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Ability to analyze, monitor and report on performance data

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

  • Ability to complete multiple, complex, tasks and assignments

  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills are required

  • Strong focus on people and ability to influence without authority

  • Ability to conduct difficult conversation with carriers

  • Advanced use of Microsoft Excel is required

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Oracle Business Intelligence and SmartSheet

  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job

  • Willingness to travel as necessary, work the required schedule, work at the specific location required, complete Penske employment application, submit to a background investigation (to include past employment, education, and criminal history) and drug screening are required.
