Oracle Senior Systems Software Engineer - Monitoring Platform in Salem, Oregon

Job Description

We are currently seeking a Senior Member of Technical Staff to join the VMIFM (Virtual Machine Infrastructure Fleet Management) team.

As a member of the VMIFM, you will take an active role in building the future of Cloud. You will define specifications for significant new projects as well as design and develop software. You will be designing and developing systems that monitor a large-scale fleet of Hypervisors and VM’s. You can innovate and drive Engineering proposals and will be constantly challenged by fun and exciting problems like how to efficiently gathering data from tons of Hypervisors and VM’s, how to track the availability and healthiness of our fleets of HV’s and VM’s, how to build real-time analytical systems that reflects what our current system status is during the large scale event (LSE) of system failures, etc.

The candidate is expected to:

  • Have the ability to debug sophisticated problems and analyze performance and scalability across a variety of configurations and workloads.

  • Builds major new features in existing systems. Improves their team in some subset of: engineering practices, ops practices, development process, ownership, mentoring. May occasionally collaborate across teams.

  • Writes correct, secure, maintainable, robust code and appropriate tests. Drives design of their features & subsystems. Drives operational readiness & excellence of their features & subsystems. Collaborates on planning and identifying and mitigating risks in their project.

  • Works independently on most projects. Sometimes needs guidance in areas that require experience building and operating mission-critical systems in industry, e. g. working across teams; making nuanced trade-offs; designing for security, concurrency, availability, performance, scalability, change; subtle aspects of operating a high-scale service.

  • Frequently identifies and remediates issues without assistance. Leads root cause analysis efforts and suggests possible solutions. Develops new metrics and dashboards to improve situational awareness. Identifies and implements solutions that reduce operational load (reduce manual touchpoints), increase service availability, improve compliance to org standards and reduce tech debt.

  • BS or MS degree in CS or equivalent experience relevant to functional area

  • 5+ years’ experience designing, developing and operating large-scale, highly available distributed systems.

  • Strong knowledge of C, Java / C++, and experience with scripting languages such as Python, Perl, etc.

  • Service fundamentals: understanding the building blocks of critical IaaS services, such as Compute, Storage, Networking.

  • Proven knowledge of data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and distributed systems fundamentals. Experience with the Cloud is a plus!

  • Development experience working on low-level, performance-critical software.

US: Hiring Range: from $74,800 to $178,200 per annum. May be eligible for bonus and equity.

Oracle maintains broad salary ranges for its roles in order to account for variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions and locations, as well as reflect Oracle’s differing products, industries and lines of business.

Candidates are typically placed into the range based on the preceding factors as well as internal peer equity.

Vacation accrual is prorated for employees working between 20 and 34 hours per week. Employees working fewer than 20 hours per week are not eligible for vacation.
