Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Working within the framework of the SPF model, the specialist conducts assessments, identifies prevention needs, plans evidence-based interventions, and collaborates with stakeholders to address substance abuse issues effectively. The Prevention Specialist is responsible for delivery of educational programs, workshops, and campaigns to raise awareness, build resilience, and foster positive behaviors among target populations. Additionally, the prevention specialist monitors and evaluates program outcomes, collects data, and prepares reports to measure the effectiveness of prevention efforts and inform future strategies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for providing prevention and intervention services to youth ages 9 to 12.

  • Communicate and collaborate with the project director, the DFC Coalitions and Alternative Schools Network, the WestCare Foundation evaluation team, Youth Leadership Councils, and other project partners.

  • Coordinate program activities with local schools and community as job requires.

  • Recruit youth to participate in program services, provide program orientation to participants, and provide prevention and intervention services to youth and families attending the prevention program.

  • Provide information about the prevention of alcohol, marijuana, and opioid use; keep current on literature and developments in the field.

  • Train youth in social networking skills, using technology to expand positive peer networks and increase knowledge of healthy alternative activities to AOD use.

  • Make referrals to appropriate community services, advocacy, mentoring, and school support services.

  • Attend staff meetings; represent the agency by speaking before the public on drug abuse education, prevention, and treatment; and attend and represent the agency at meetings, as requested by the project director.

  • Support program operations and report problems and progress to project director.

  • Work with schools to deliver evidence-based practice Botvin Life Skills Training curriculum and assist research assistant with pre- and post-tests.

  • Embrace and embody the mission, vision, guiding principles, clinical vision, and goals of WestCare Foundation.

  • During your tenure with WestCare there may be new requirements, including, but not limited to vaccinations that are issued by local, State, Federal, and/or Funders that WestCare may have to comply with. Should this occur Human Resources or appropriate personnel will inform you.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience:

  • Two (2) years’ experience working in substance abuse prevention, community health promotion, or related fields is highly desirable. Experience with the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) model is a plus.

  • A strong understanding of substance abuse issues, mental health promotion, and evidence-based prevention strategies is essential. Familiarity with theories of behavior change, public health principles, and community organizing approaches is advantageous.

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, social work, psychology, or a related field is strongly desired. High School diploma or its equivalent is required.

    Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily performed in an office or in a Residential/Outpatient treatment setting.

  • Travel throughout and around the community and outreach is required.
