JOB SUMMARY
The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the safety, security and well-being of the Hamline University campus community. Public Safety Officers enforce University policy, state and federal law and play a key role in crime prevention. Each officer is required to be completely knowledgeable of all areas of the position and performance of duties will be held to a high standard. Each officer will become thoroughly familiar with all areas of assignment for the purpose
of assisting community members, preventing crime through active patrols, attention to detail and engagement of community members and guests. Public Safety Officers must successfully complete all initial and sustainment training including, but not limited to annual use of force and medical recertification.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
● Ensure safety and security of university ground utilizing foot and vehicle patrols
● Provide initial response to crimes, policy violations, emergencies, accidents and all
other requests for assistance
● Liaison with police, fire and emergency responders
● Deescalate disruptive activity and when necessary detain and control persons
engaged in criminal acts or acts endangering the safety of the Hamline University
community
● Write professional, detailed narrative and investigative reports
● Enforce, university policy, state and federal law
● Complete designated NIMS and ICS courses within 90 days of start date
● Respond to life safety system alarms (fire, etc.) and supervise building evacuations
● Professional respond to all calls for service (access requests, safety escorts, jump
starts, etc)
● Effectively use security technical systems to include CCTV, VMS, access control,
alarm systems, elevator control, etc.
● Trespass individual from campus when appropriate
● Function as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as required by the Clery Act
● Support special events as directed by department leadership
● Complete driver training and safely operate university vehicles as required
● Complete and retain required medical certifications. BLS/First Aid within first 90
days of employment and EMR within first year of employment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to the: Assistant Director of Safety and Security
This position does not supervise other employees.
This position does not supervise student workers.
BUDGET MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES
● Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google, Google Apps, reporting programs,
camera systems, basic security systems
● Ability to respond effectively and respectfully to people of diverse backgrounds in a manner
that affirms their worth and preserves the dignity of individuals, families and communities
● Excellent communications skills, verbal and non-verbal
● Ability to write reports in a clear and effective manner
● Basic knowledge of Clery Act requirements, Title IX and MN Sexual Assault Law for Higher
Education
● Ability to pass initial and annual defensive tactics training
● Ability to carry and safely use all department issued equipment
● Experience and sensitivity working with students from diverse backgrounds.
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
● High School diploma or GED
● Excellent communications skills
● 1+ year of working with basic computer programs (Word, Excel, etc)
● Ability to respond to varied dynamic, stressful incidents and make critical decisions in a
timely manner with limited supervision
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
● Valid driver’s license
● Associate degree from an accredited college or university
● 1+ years of security experience at an institution of higher education
● Emergency Medical Responder (EMR certification)

● This is a full time, 1.0 FTE, exempt position, 12 months a year.
