What You Will Do :
The Clinical Genomics Developer will provide development and architecture guidance for a development team working on software projects that vary in size and complexity. The position will entail coordinating development efforts within a project team to deliver cutting-edge research tools and software features. Development projects include the extension of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) solutions that have been integrated to provide clinical genomics research tools to enhance discovery of genetic variants and correlates of disease. Applications developed by the team are used in clinical and research settings and development is driven by continued use and iterative feedback from researchers and clinical staff as well as subject matter experts and software development team members. Strong communication skills for this position are essential as the Clinical Genomics Developer may need to mentor junior developers and frequently converse with non-computational subject matter experts.
Working as part of a software development team in an agile environment, documenting code, tracking tasks, and helping to establish standard development procedures and ensure quality
Developing new applications as well as extending existing applications; guiding the development of new features and customizations that harmonize with existing in-house and COTS/FOSS software codebases
Finding creative solutions to scale the performance of existing analysis pipelines to meet the demands of rapidly growing datasets
Collaborating between the project team and internal teams supporting enterprise infrastructure to deploy and maintain software
Experimenting with new technologies and systems as well as prototyping solutions for potential integration into existing infrastructure; Evaluating and implementing methods to scale research algorithms and AI/ML processes for gene candidate prioritization and integrate as features into our applications
Staying apprised of updates and roadmaps for the COTS/FOSS solutions in use and evaluate their impact on our customized solutions to aid in planning our development schedule
Mentoring the development team including collaboratively developing best practices and sharing knowledge, team policies and procedures
Review and address security vulnerabilities in collaboration with our security and infrastructure teams
Working with Stakeholders, Users, and Project Managers to meet NIH Project Goals and Milestones; Translating the needs of medical and biological userbases into effective technical solutions
Collaborating with external developer communities and vendor technical support
What You Will Need :
M.S. in computer science or related field
Full stack web application development and maintenance experience
Experience mentoring other developers and reviewing and providing feedback on other developer’s work
3+ years of experience with Python development and related frameworks such as Django or Flask
3+ years of demonstrated experience working on back-end development including
Linux shell scripting – e.g., BASH
Experience developing using either the Django framework and/or Java Spring Boot framework
Data modelling and data manipulation using SQL and NoSQL databases
3+ years of front-end development experience including HTML5, CSS3
Experience developing and using RESTful web services and JSON or XML objects for communication
2+ years of experience with Git and code deployments to multiple environments and involving reviewing the contributions of multiple team members
Experience with distributed computing environments (Apache Spark, Elasticsearch, etc.)
Experience communicating with end users on software development projects; being comfortable explaining complex computational terms using simple language for a non-computational audience
Experience architecting solutions that involve custom development of free and open source or commercial off the shelf software and integrations including middleware or data staging Extract-Transform-Load pipelines
Experience working with vendor technical support and/or open-source software community forums to evaluate issues and collaborate on their resolution
Demonstrated experience extending the functionality of existing software; ability to learn an existing body of code and extend it
Healthcare and clinical data experience (PII and sensitive data)
Familiarity with development models using the AWS cloud platform (S3, EC2, Lambda functions)
What Would Be Nice To Have :
Knowledge of the Broad Institute applications seqr and/or HAIL
Experience developing within the context of LabKey or other LIMS-like systems
Experience with developing front end modules to provide custom UI on top of a LIMS back-end
Experience reviewing and responding to security vulnerability reports
The annual salary range for this position is $89,100.00-$133,700.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
