Responsibilities The incumbent is assigned as a Staff Dentist of the Dental Service and shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry including the ability to perform selected specialty services in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The incumbent will provide direct patient care, manage indirect patient care, supervise qualified dental auxiliary and dental hygienists, and will be assigned administrative and/or supervisory duties as delegated by the Chief/ACOS. As a dental provider, the incumbent will be responsible for providing consultation, examination, and treatment within the full scope of general dental procedures following a regularly scheduled patient clinic and on an as-needed basis. In the course of fulfilling his/her role, the Staff Dentist, Dental Service also interacts with staff of other Services within the facility or at other VA's, VA Office of Dentistry, affiliated institutions, and individual Veterans. Providing direct patient care consistent with his/her clinical privileges. Perform oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity, including comprehensive examination, problem-focused examination, and periodic oral examination. Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions. Provide interprofessional patient care by performing dental consultations and collaborating with other Services of the Medical Center on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Administer local anesthesia. Perform routine and complex restoration of teeth, including select specialty services such as endodontics. Perform simple and complex extractions of teeth. Perform alveoloplasty and other routine surgical procedures. Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns, restoration of dental implants, and fixed bridge work. Provide direct and indirect supervision to qualified dental auxiliary staff and dental hygienists. Prescribe medications for dental problems, such as pain medications or antibiotics. Keep records relating to the oral health of patients and the treatments given to them. Manage and communicate with other staff members to provide care to patients. Manage externally-provided dental care through referral, treatment determination, and indirect care oversight. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am to 4:00 pm - other tours may be required if Veteran needs arise or as directed by the Chief, Dental Service. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. AND Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. AND Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Preferred Experience: Completion of a General Practice Residency or Advanced Education in General Dentistry and/or a minimum of 5 years of practice experience. VA Dentistry or hospital dentistry experience is highly desired. References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-3 Dentist Qualification Standard. Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; Light carrying, under 15 pounds; Use of fingers; Walking, 2 hours; Standing, 2 hours; Work closely with others; and work alone.
