VCA Animal Hospitals Radiation Therapy Technician (RTT) in Sacramento, California

Position Overview

VCA Sacramento Veterinary Referral Center (SVRC) is seeking a Radiation Therapy Technician to join our Radiation Oncology team. We have a supportive and fun team of team board-certified specialists in internal medicine, surgery, emergency and critical care, anesthesiology, cardiology, neurology, rehabilitation, medical and radiation oncology, and radiology.

Our ideal applicant would possess a track record of clinical excellence and diverse therapy experience. However, prior veterinary experience is not required. Applicants should feel comfortable working and communicating both with technicians and doctors to achieve the goals of patient care. We encourage leadership, asking questions, adapting to the needs and styles of clients and patients, and making the job your own. Therapists should be caring, sympathetic, responsible, and detail oriented. They will be able to direct or supervise others, with experience will correctly assess patients’ conditions, and will communicate with the staff radiation oncologist. They will coordinate and provide radiation therapy for in- and outpatients; and actively facilitate a team-oriented work ethic, both within the Radiation Oncology service and the rest of the hospital.

This is a full-time, daytime position (Monday–Friday, 5x8-hour shifts) offering a competitive pay range of $48–$52 per hour.

Required Qualifications (pending graduation acceptable)

  • Minimum 2 year Associates Degree in an ARRT accredited program

  • ARRT (American Register of Radiologic Technologists) Credentials in Radiation Therapy

  • California Radiologic Technology Certification

Basic Physical Requirements:

  • Dependable attendance is required

  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds

  • This position requires the ability to walk, bend, stand and reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day

  • Visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate records, recognize people and understand written directions.

Job Description/Tasks:

  • General Responsibilities -

  • Administer safe, precise and effective external beam radiation therapy. In addition, under the supervision of the Specialty Lead and/or the direction of a staff veterinary radiation oncologist, will perform a variety of duties to assist in providing for care of radiation oncology patients and promoting a safe, positive and team-oriented environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of standard procedures related to radiation therapy, such as stereotactic treatment delivery, patient setup tolerances and rationale, etc.

  • Assist the radiation oncologist during advanced/critical therapy

  • Possess general knowledge of physics and radiation biology related to the rationale behind radiation therapy

  • Participate in accurate records keeping through the use of ARIA, Eclipse, hospital EMR and Google Docs

  • Light dosimetry, including image import, basic contouring and use of Care Path to facilitate treatment plan development

  • Prepare and maintain the radiation oncology space for all radiation therapy procedures and assemble the type and quantity of material and special equipment needed for daily procedures and possible emergencies

  • Varian Halcyon 2.0 Linear Accelerator with kV Imaging Therapy Operation and Quality Assurance -

  • Run machine performance checks (MPC, DQA3) each morning and as needed throughout the day

  • Perform patient quality assurance testing

  • Collaborate with Varian hardware and software support to maintain smooth service operation

  • Basic Trouble-shooting to address treatment system errors

  • CT Simulation (Canon Aquilion 64 slice) -

  • Primarily position patients and use as needed a variety of immobilization devices to generate reliable setups that maximize patient comfort and reduce potential RT side effects

  • Process and clean special equipment including bolus, bite plates, treatment couch, face masks, vaclok bags and bridges

  • Intermittently perform CT scanner warm-up and shutdown as appropriate for the machine

  • Intermittently acquire CT images, at the direction of the attending doctor, for the purposes of RT simulation

  • As needed communicate if there are issues that need to be addressed with the CT scanner
