You will be a Data Center Operations Specialist in our Infrastructure Platform Services department and will serve as a journey member under the direction of the Senior Data Center Operations Lead. We are looking for someone that can work independently and hit the ground running.

Key functions and responsibilities associated with this position include:

  1. Knowledge of all server platforms and LAN/WAN environments supported and ability to perform installation, upgrades, installation or configuration with data center or vendor best practices.

  2. Basic troubleshooting, and diagnostic skills on a variety of hardware including but not limited to, Networking, Storage and Compute infrastructure.

  3. Understanding of power distribution within IT Data Center and Telecommunication Rooms (both campus and Data Center).

  4. Understanding of heating and cooling (i.e. hot/cold) IT Data Center design methodologies.

  5. Understanding of data center inventory and capacity management methodologies.

Purpose

Performs professional technical system support and maintenance for SMUD’s corporate-wide computer hardware environment in the areas of enhancement, installation, support, maintenance and training to ensure SMUD’s use of technology supports its current and future business practices.

Nature and Scope

Serves as a journey-level resource in a relevant professional discipline; works independently on projects of minor to moderate complexity; exercises independent judgment and discretion within established broad guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for day to day activities, project work and capacity management for SMUD data center facilities and SMUD campus telecommunications rooms to include mentoring junior team members.

  • Assist with data center and IDF/MDF design and installation activities to include, but are not limited to, data center layouts, cage builds, rack layouts, electrical circuits, HVAC hot/cold aisle configuration, etc.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and procedures for Data Center activities and standards.

  • Computer rack design, equipment installation and maintenance.

  • Fiber and Copper network infrastructure and cable installation and maintenance.

  • Work with DCIM software to track facility layout; manage Data Center infrastructure asset database; provide 24-hour on call rotation support.

  • Manage employee and vendor access of SMUD data center facilities.

  • Monitoring site for capacity needs and power/cooling.

  • Manage work and priorities through ticketing system.

  • Install and maintain CDU, PDU and UPS infrastructure.

  • Other related duties as assigned

Required Education

  • AA/AS degree from an accredited college or university majoring in Computer Science, MIS, Business Administration or other closely related field or equivalent experience.

Required Experience

  • Three or more (3+) years of progressively responsible relevant professional work experience in planning, installing, maintaining and supporting data center infrastructure or other closely related experience.

Required Licenses/Certificates

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License and a satisfactory driving record (not more than two moving violations in the last two years).

  • Candidates must be able to pass and maintain CIP (Critical Infrastructure Protection) background clearance.

Knowledge Of

Concepts of computer hardware; methods for accessing data; fundamentals of rational and network database management; concepts and operation of multi-user and multitasking operating system; fundamentals of desktop hardware, software and operating systems including diagnostic tools; terminology for PC hardware, software and networking; operating use of hardware and peripherals; concepts and principles related to implementing technology solutions; techniques and practices for resolving complex technical issues; techniques related to customer relations; concepts of distributed and network computing; standard operating procedures for modern office equipment including a computer and applicable software; English grammar, punctuation and vocabulary standards. Concepts of computer hardware; methods for accessing data; fundamentals of rational and network database management; various server platforms and LAN/WAN environments; fundamentals of desktop hardware, software and operating systems including diagnostic tools; terminology for PC hardware, software and networking; operating use of hardware and peripherals; concepts and principles related to implementing technology solutions; techniques and practices for resolving complex technical issues; techniques related to customer relations; concepts of distributed and network computing; standard operating procedures for modern office equipment including a computer and applicable software; English grammar, punctuation and vocabulary standards.

Skills To

Respond to and resolve customer issues, concerns and needs; develop creative ways to solve a problem; stay abreast of new IT technology, tools and methods to develop and support business applications; stage, assemble, configure and test.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience with the following tools/applications:

  • Diagramming software such as Visio/AutoCAD

  • Troubleshooting tools such as Sniffers or Fluke

  • DCIM software such as Graphical Network netTerrain

  • Ticketing software including ServiceNow

  • Experience with Office 365 Suite, advanced Excel skills desired

  • 3 years of experience with cable management in data centers and/or campus IDFs

This role will be an on-site role that will require being in person at one of SMUD's campuses daily to complete work tasks.
