General Summary Safely and effectively performs multiple and complex operations functions for a SSC fertilizer plant. Responsibilities are assigned to maximize plant efficiency and to fulfill production goals. Applies operations expertise, mechanical aptitude, consistent performance, leadership, and coaching to support plant team members and overall facility goals. Performs work under direct supervision. Essential Job Functions For 12 or more of the operations identified, develop and maintain effective working knowledge of production procedures and assume full responsibility for operational requirements, including: communication, documentation, efficiency, scheduling, and maintenance. Safely utilize the proper tools and equipment to complete assignments. Bag Palletizer -- Handle 25-35 ton per hour bag flow for shift duration, recognizes bags and set pattern for stack on trucks and pallets, insures correct stretch wrapping, culls pallets that need repair as the pallets are placed for stacking. Fills downtime during change-overs or other interruptions with constructive work, works as a team player, helps others learn and exert self to assure production efficiency. Assures a neat and solid stack, follows safety rules and promotes safe conduct, maintains counts on bags per pallet or truck. Bag Stacker -- Handle 25-35 ton per hour bag flow for shift duration, recognizes bags and set pattern for stack on trucks and pallets, recognizes standard vs non-standard pallets, culls pallets that need repair as the pallets are placed for stacking. Fills downtime during change-overs or other interruptions with constructive work, works as a team player, helps others learn and exert self to assure production efficiency. Assures a neat and solid stack, follows safety rules and promotes safe conduct, maintains counts on bags per pallet or truck. Bag Weight Monitor -- Able to determine plus and minus weight variance to assure legal weight and prevent excess shrink. Weighs at least 1 bag from each spout for every 12 bags produced for a full shift, instructs bag hanger to adjust weights, keep scale w/ check weight daily. Maintains bag flow to protect packaging and reduce pile-up at the stack station. Helps maintain shipping area in a safe and orderly fashion, follows and supports all safety programs and works with team to maintain production, utilizes slack periods to maintain work area. Bulk Loader/Unloader --Unload all bulk ingredients upon arrival and place them in correct bin. Load all bulk trucks as they arrive. Assist on the bag line when no truck to load or unload. Help clean facility including sweeping, shoveling, mowing and weed eating when required by supervisor. Assist in chemical warehouse as needed. Provide support to all other functions of processing when required by supervisor. Valve Pack -- Able to consistently hang bags to produce 30+ tons of 50 lb bagged goods per hour on straight runs. Must hang bags consistently placed to maintain weights. Must adjust counter weights to assure legal net weight and not allow excessive shrink. Must know when and how to clean out machine to prevent contamination that could cause fines for off-grade product. Must know when and how to adjust blower weights to provide efficient bagging, will clean and grease machine daily to assure that scale beams maintain accuracy. Understands machine function sufficiently to guide maintenance when major repairs are needed. Knows how to start and stop the machinery necessary to process product from the elevator to the bag stackers. Maintains empty bags to alternate operator and assists stackers as time is available, recognizes bags needed and is familiar with where they are stored. Forklift Driver -- Performs complete pre-start check and corresponding paper work. Recognizes and sort pallets by type and condition. Drive safely and efficiently as prescribed by driver training. Able to clear at least one line while also loading out or cleans two lines and stores product properly, recognizes product by type and assures proper truck loading by product, company and tonnage. Recognizes bag types and knows where to locate empty bags to meet bagger needs, works with other drivers and baggers to assure that production is maintained and that trucks are efficiently loaded. Counts bags per pallet to assure customer receives correct loading, maintains equipment and facility in a respectable condition, assists all other crew members as time permits, must be able to safely use dock equipment and assist truck drivers backing in to dock. Must know and use chocking procedures, must take and pass driver training program annually. Tractor Driver -- Performs complete pre start checks and service and the corresponding paper work, knows mill designations and capacities to assure accuracy and efficiency. Drive safely and efficiently to handle multiple tractor jobs and driving conditions, knows product and bin designations and promotes clear communications to assure correct product placement, maintains accurate loading volumes to minimize overruns, maintains delivery systems through screens and chutes (clean and grease). Assists other jobs as time is available, maintains orderly work areas, controls spillage inventory waste and contamination. Knows and promotes safety rules, knows machinery sufficiently to guide maintenance and repair, identifies product quality and handling procedures that are necessary for efficient handling. Skid Loader -- Knows and follows pre-start check list and completes paper work, knows clean-up areas and mineral feed locations, identifies spills and piles and removes it to appropriate deposit areas. Avoids damaging other equipment by making responsible decisions to park the machine and use hand labor where needed. Observes all safety rules without exception. Maintains loader free of debris and properly lubricated, coordinates all clean-up efforts with foremen. Sampler -- Able to sample piles and bag for analysis checks, able to prepare sample and send for processing, maintains reference samples within 90-day time frame, can operate density scales for random and inventory checks, does periodic crosscheck on manufacturing sample for the lab and the reference pile, promotes plant safety, assures proper bin labeling. Capable of taking accurate bulk inventories. Bulk Weight Monitor -- Knows operation start up and shut down procedure, performs service work on machinery to assure efficient operation. Maintains loading areas to prevent environmental contamination, product contamination, equipment failure etc. Monitors weights and accumulates totals to assure accurate loading, controls flow and filling to prevent losses, cleans equipment to assure operation without contamination. Promotes safety and maintains area to assure safety, knows products and densities well enough to set up loads and anticipate special handling needs. Ammoniator -- Knows start-up and stop procedures. Knows liquid handling systems and procedures. Maintains and monitors ammoniator and its feed and discharge systems, monitors just control and amperage meters to assure proper operation, monitors product and adjust moisture balance to assure proper granulation, sets up and monitors dry batch system, knows and observes all safety rules. Maintains operation floor in safe, hazard-free condition. Assist all other crewmembers, skill should be attainable after at least 5 years of working in the area. Fully supervised training and certification for a 6 month period by at least two supervisors is required. Blender Operator -- Control process equipment accurately to assure mix and delivery, set up batch size from formulas and assure accurate weighing. Coordinates delivery with receiving process (bagger or bulk) to assure on time delivery without over or under mixing. Knows and controls raw materials to be certain of adequate supply and correct measurements to add to mix. Performs routine service to all components (cleaning, grease, oil, etc.) Assist others when time is available, adheres to and promotes safety rules and practices. Recognizes raw materials to crosscheck the delivery of the material. Completes paper work in a timely manner. Proficiency in this job requires at least 2 years supervised experience to encounter the highly variable demands that require adjustments (special mixes, weather conditions) Dry Receiving -- Bulk -- Controlling the machinery involved here requires skill in both tractor driving and unloading system. Must know bin locations, designations and method of filling, must know products and materials to ascertain correct handling. Sets up and starts necessary equipment to be utilized (winches, tractors, elevator, etc.) Services machinery on a regular schedule, observes all safety rules and assures a safe work area, controls bin filling to prevent contamination and facilitate inventory. Completes paper work to office. Cleans rail cars and closes properly for re-loading. Maintains clean work areas and prevents environmental escapes. Liquid Receiving -- Must know liquid products and be able to apply the appropriate handling procedures. Must be able to operate all liquid controls and fittings. Will assure all delivery vessels are empty, properly placard and positioned for shipping. Handles reporting of inventories to foreman. Is fully trained and practices all safety rules, procedures, and directives (chokes cars and properly places unloading markers). Properly fits and wears all protective equipment and emergency equipment. Recognizes irregularities in equipment and product and initiate appropriate action. Inspects and maintains all equipment, maintains safe work area, assists others as time is available. Overhead Car Driver -- Driver will know products, bins, and track/alley designations and locations, operation checks and starting procedures for all components will be followed. Maintaining a clean, safe work place is mandatory, servicing all machinery to assure proper function is mandatory, protection through safe operation of people, product and the facility will be demonstrated. Compliance with all safety rules will be mandatory. Rail Switch Driver -- Driver will know products, bins, and track/alley designations and locations, operation checks and starting procedures for all components will be followed. Maintaining a clean, safe work place is mandatory, servicing all machinery to assure proper function is mandatory, protection through safe operation of people, product and the facility will be demonstrated. Compliance with all safety rules will be mandatory. Knows proper procedure for placement on and off tracks and hooking and releasing rail cars. Bag Labeler -- Knows product designations and characteristics to set up correct bag size and nomenclature. Checks bag labels to verify accurate labeling, maintains accurate counts of labeled bags, co-ordinates with foreman to be certain to have proper bags as needed, knows storage locations of bags and co-ordinates with forklifts to maintain labeling supply. Knows standard label grades and co-ordinates with office to maintain a supply of labels. Watches tag inventory and maintains supply, maintains work area to assure efficient operation and protect bag inventories, knows and supports all safety rules. General Carpentry --Can identify various fasteners, lumber and other building materials by size and type (#6 common nail, 2x4 treated etc.) Handles measuring, leveling, squaring etc. Instruments accurately, can identify and effect needed repairs. Can take direction well enough to construct projects as designed. Maintains all equipment in a safe and useable condition, uses all tools of trade competently and only for intended use. Knows location of tools and supplies and makes sure they are returned, maintains an orderly properly marked work area. Complies with all safety rules. Basic Mechanics -- knows storage locations for repair parts and materials, knows most of the tools required by various jobs and where they are stored, can handle fundamental part replacement on simple machines. Can use torch and is at least partially trained with arc welder. Can accurately utilize tape measure, square and calipers. Follows all safety rules, maintains tools and makes sure they are put away properly, should be skilled with all rolling stock, will be well aquatinted with all areas of the facility. Knows materials and finish goods and is knowledgeable about working maintenance in these products. Identifies minor repairs needed and works with maintenance to complete repairs. Lead Associate --Give instruction to production employees and assist in the daily production of blending and bagging fertilizer. Fill blender with materials using batch orders. Keep bulk materials organized and floors clean. Give and follow written and verbal instructions for daily production tasks. Check load orders, batch sheets, analysis tags and production totals. Additional essential job functions include: * Assist with maintenance of fertilizer plant grounds, building, and equipment as assigned. * Provide coaching and on-the-job training to new employees and current team members to assist with facility cross-training initiates. Communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner. * Demonstrate initiative to develop new operations skills. Participate in training opportunities offered by SSC to increase familiarity with facility and learn procedures for performing additional plant operations. * Comply with requirements of the SSC Quality Control (QC) Program in each operation performed. Immediately notify plant leadership of any suspected problem with product quality. Review and comply with QC updates relative to assigned operations. * Maintain clean and orderly work area by keeping tools and equipment in proper places and all materials off the floor. Perform all related cleaning and sanitizing of equipment. Properly dispose of waste material. Be proactive with cleaning efforts. Follow all facility housekeeping requirements and related procedures. * Work safely as to not cause harm to yourself, co-workers, equipment, or inventory. Comply with OSHA regulations, Southern States Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards, work rules and policies. * Perform all other job functions as assigned. Education: Requires a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Experience: Requires four (4) years of experience working in a fertilizer plant or manufacturing environment operating production equipment. Previous SSC work experience a plus. Requirements * Able to safely operate specialized production equipment, motorized vehicles, controls, and systems as determined by assignment and location * Mechanical aptitude and functional knowledge of a variety of plant production equipment * Able to apply expertise to resolve complex issues * Able to consistently adhere to quality requirements, production metrics, and related policies governing the fertilizer production program * Able to work in a fast paced team environment where job assignments may vary based on production and business need * Able to provide coaching to team members and communicate technical information clearly * Able to add, subtract, multiply, divide and calculate percentages in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals * Able to apply logic and understanding to carry out instructions given in written, oral and diagram form * Able to complete paperwork, reports, and/or documentation, in a legible, organized, and timely manner * Attention to detail * Able to speak, read, write the English language in a proficient manner * Overtime, alternate shift, schedule, or weekend may be required as determined by business need * Able to report to work in adverse weather conditions is required Work Environment Primarily performs essential job functions in an indoor environment that is not climate controlled and experiences temperature and humidity swings. Occasionally performs essential functions outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions. May require use of stairs. May work on ladders or scaffolding. May work in confined spaces. Frequently exposed to hazards including: * Dust, odors, fumes, and chemicals associated with the production, packaging, warehousing, and distribution of fertilizer products * Moving mechanical parts, equipment, and vehicles * Electrical current, vibrations, lubricants and wet surfaces * Noise levels where hearing protection may be required per PPE Plan Physical Activities & Requirements -- will vary based on assigned operations. Below is a general summary: * Continuously balance and bend; stand and walk on concrete; reach with arms and hands, use hands in repetitive motion; manual dexterity (fingers), grasp and handle fertilizer bags, containers, and equipment controls; utilize eye/hand coordination; turn and twist head/neck and waist/back. Pull, push, lift, carry up to 50 pounds unassisted. * Frequently crouch, kneel, stack, stoop, sweep. Pull, push, lift, carry 50-80 pounds, may be assisted. * Occasionally climb, shovel; drive vehicles, loader, forklift, or operate rail car and related track switches depending upon location. Utilize eye/hand/foot coordination. Pull, push, lift, carry 80- 100 pounds, may be assisted. Must be able to hear equipment sounds, plant pages, co-workers and radio. Must be able to speak to co-workers regarding production and safety. Must be able to utilize sense of smell to identify ingredients and products, and detect quality issues. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Tools & Equipment Hard hat, steel toed shoes, and all other PPE as required by operation assignments. Specialized fertilizer production equipment and controls, may vary by location and assigned operations. Forklift, pallet jack, handcart, tractor, rail cars and related track switches. Ladder, scale, computer, printer, copier, calculator, manuals and forms, writing instrument, telephone, intercom, and other location specific equipment as necessary.
