Genesis Community Homes Direct Support Professional Friend (DSPF) in Royersford, Pennsylvania

The Direct Support Professional Friend is a person who is not only focused on the individuals saftey, health, and their environment but is concerned with the individual themsleves and is involved in their day.  This person is asking what does the individuals in my care like to do, like to eat, like to talk about, etc.. Then that person is doing those things OR assisting with scheduling those activities. The DSPF is engaged, attentive and listening to the individual's wants and needs. They pay attention to how the individual is feeling and asking what can I do to make a difference. They assist and support in the planning and implementation of a program to meet the social, emotional, physical and personal needs of each Individual. Assists, supports, and instructs Individuals in self-help skills designed to encourage independence.  Accompanies Individuals on community outings, medical appointments, and activites as indicated.  

Responsibilities 

  • Keeping those in the program safe while in the community and at home.  Which includes safe working area, safe driving, and safe living environment.  

  • Keeping those in the program healthy by offering support to make healthy food choices and maintain healthy relationship boundaries.  These supports include sharing all concerns with the Program Specialist and Residential Lead Staff (RLS) when needed.

``` - Engage the individuals in the program.  Look to participate or suggest activities or time in the community.  Follow the activities calendar or suggest an activity, watching a movie, taking a walk in the community, etc...   

  • Keeping the program clean:

``` - Wash ALL dishes in the sink. Sweep the floor, wipe down countertops, appliances including handles, wipe down the stove if there is food on it, empty trash, clean out sink,  

  • Clean and disinfect the bathroom, toilet, sink, mirror, replenish toilet paper, soap, and remove trash. 

  • Common areas are to be swept during every shift. Overnight is responsible to mop common area floors.

``` - Assist individuals with keeping their bedrooms/bathrooms clean and tidy. Cook meals for breakfast, lunch or dinner.  Provide transportation to and from events, outings, or community employment.  

  • Checking the refrigerator for expired food, labels on all food, clean spills, leftovers are to be used or tossed after 3 days.

``` - Cooking -following the menu daily.  You are to prepare a healthy breakfast, lunch or dinner depending on your shift.  

  • Transportation -you are to safely transport individuals to and from their scheduled activity/event or job.  

  • Medication Administration. You are to take the medication administration training to administer medication and maintain your certification with annual observations.

``` - Maintain a positive uplifting atmosphere by speaking positive and respectfully to and about others.  (SC, coworkers, family members...)  

  • Read and follow the policies and procedures written and established by Genesis Community Homes. (a binder is in each program)  

  • Maintain 24 hours of training annually.

Job Specifications 

EDUCATION:  High School Diploma or GED  

 

EXPERIENCE:  Experience working directly with adults with intellectual/ developmental disabilities and/or mental health diagnoses.  Basic experience using Apps on a smart phone (When I Work) preferred.  Must possess and maintain valid driver's license and be at least 21 years of age. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Regularly requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing stairs, cleaning. Often requires lifting of weight up to 50lbs. Requires physical ability to successfully perform CPR, First Aid techniques. Operates Genesis Community Homes Vehicles.   

 

TRAINING:  Required courses as per licensing regulations, ie. Training syllabus.  

 

LEVEL OF SUPERVISION:  Moderate 

 

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE:  Regularly works inside areas that are adequately lighted and ventilated.  May occasionally work outside while instructing outdoor activities or community outings. Occasionally exposed to equipment and machinery with moving parts. Exposed to household cleaning supplies. Protective equipment: gloves, protective eyewear, disposable masks, disposable gown and close-toed shoes. Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens and COVID 19.
