Phillips 66 Process Design Engineer, Wood River Refinery in Roxana, Illinois

The Process Design Engineer is responsible for overall process design for refinery projects from concept development through detailed engineering, commissioning, and start-up. The Process Design Engineer ensures the projects are technically sound, achieve safety and environmental objectives, and are consistent with PSM management of change.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Adhering to the Wood River Refinery project work process while managing multiple projects

  • Having a strong understanding of the FEL process and deliverables required at each stage gate

  • Coordinating project work with internal customers, as well as outside engineering/construction contractors

  • Supporting the Management of Change process for the project

  • Supporting the Refinery capital planning activities

  • Developing the process design for refinery projects

  • Using process modeling when needed

  • Participating in an integrated project team for the evaluation of options and implementation of the project

  • Working closely with refinery operational customers in developing project solutions

  • Conducting process design progress meetings particularly during the FEL 1 and FEL 2 phases of the project

  • Working with the key stakeholders to ensure the project scope will meet project objectives

  • Producing initial data sheets with all relevant process information for all equipment needed for a project

  • Participating in project PHA’s and hazard analyses

  • Presenting and advocating the recommended project option to the refinery management team

  • Clearly explaining and justifying the proposed project and alternatives considered for the authorization phase of the project

  • Supporting the construction and start-up phases of the project as needed

  • Witnessing key equipment installations including equipment internals

  • Working closely with Operations to assure project is successfully commissioned and started up

  • Generating process related operator training packages for projects

  • Assisting with procedure updates as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering

  • Experience in a refining, chemical or petrochemical industry

  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:

  • Travel up to 5% of the time

  • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height

  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases

  • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat

  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear, and eye protection)

  • Maintain face daily so that a respirator / face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and / or clean shaven)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 or more years of Process Design experience

  • Process modeling experience

  • Proficient at heat and material balances for refinery processes

  • Excellent presentation, team, and interpersonal skills

The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.

The base pay range for this role is $97,200 - $140,700 depending on a candidate's relevant work experience and education.
