Science Teacher - (Solstice School) Rowley

At Solstice Day School, we integrate a strong, fully accredited academic curriculum with a trauma-informed therapeutic model of care for students in grades 7 through 12 who have learning, mental health or behavioral health issues.

With small class sizes and a student-teacher ratio of 8:1, our highly qualified and clinically supported faculty is able to provide highly differentiated and individualized instruction that meets the needs of each student as outlined in their individualized educational plan (IEP). Clinicians and allied health staff work closely with teachers, parents, and community providers to ensure the highest quality education and trauma-informed care in an environment that promotes safety and healing for students.

Under direction of the Education Director, the Teacher will provide science instruction to students with emotional and behavioral issues, through a commitment to team participation in planning and implementation of student programs including special instruction, tutorial assistance, and consultation to education staff. Content to include: Earth Science, Psychics, Biology, and Chemistry.

Job Responsibilities;

Maintains accurate and complete student records, and prepares reports on student’s and activities, as required by laws, organization policies, and administrative regulations.

  1. Teaches socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement.

  2. Prepares materials and classrooms for class activities; administers and grades tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress.

  3. Delivers instruction on MCAS preparation and facilitates MCAS administration or other standardized tests.

  4. Establishes and enforces rules for behavior and policies and procedures to maintain a positive learning environment for all students.

  5. In collaboration with Educational Director develops individual educational plans designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social development. Prepares objectives and outlines for courses of study, following Common Core standards for high school science.

  6. Through the use of instructional and lab time, plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of science instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.

  7. Instructs through lectures, discussions, and demonstrations in one to three science disciplines. Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicates those objectives to students.

  8. Employs special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.

  9. Acts as coordinator of IEP implementation with general education staff; monitors student progress, participates in review and revisions of IEP, as appropriate.

  10. Meets with other staff members to discuss individual students' needs and progress.

  11. Meets with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress, and to determine their priorities for their children and their resource needs

  12. Observes and evaluates students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.

  13. Uses computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.

  14. Prepares for assigned classes, and shows written evidence of preparation in the form of lesson plans upon request of immediate supervisor(s). Attends supervision as scheduled and integrates supervision feedback into work performance.

  15. Maintains all required training certifications (TCI, first aid, CPR etc.).

  16. Provides crisis supervision and floor assistance as needed; responds in accordance with TCI protocols.

  17. Attends staff meetings, and serve on committees as required.

  18. Selects, stores, orders, issues, and inventories classroom equipment, materials, and supplies.

  19. Other related duties as assigned.

Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; demonstrates group presentation skills; participates in meetings. Writes clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; varies writing style to meet needs. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from consumers, regulatory agencies, or other service providers. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.


Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university and holds a MA certification or eligible for MA certification as a grade 9-12 science teacher in one or more content areas. Master’s degree preferred as well as a certificate in special education preferred. Experience working with students who have emotional and behavioral issues; modifying/adapting general education curriculum; providing education services in varied environments. Ability to function as a member of an educational team, collaborate with general education staff, support personnel, community agencies, and parents. Strong behavior management and positive discipline skills. Ability to be flexible and receptive to change. Computer literate in standard desktop applications such as Windows, Word, and Excel
