This posting will be used to fill two (2) vacancies in the Metro District Highway Helper Program. The two (2) shifts available are:
Monday - Friday, Evening Shift, 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Rotating Weekends, (10-hour days) 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. when working weekdays; 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday workdays; 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday workdays. Week One: Wed-off; Thurs-work, Fri-work; Sat-off; Sun-off; Mon-work; Tues-work. Week Two : Wed-off; Thurs-work; Fri-work; Sat-work; Sun-work; Mon-off; Tues-off.
The Highway Helper responds to incidents such as crashes, stalls, debris, and medical situations, on the metropolitan freeway system. The position performs initial emergency traffic control, assesses the incident, and determines the appropriate action. The position will diagnose and fix minor mechanical problems on site (e.g., tire change, gasoline, jump start, etc.) and provide first aid medical services as needed.
In addition, this position supports MnDOT's Congestion Management, Incident Management, and Traveler Information programs by helping clear incidents in a safe and timely manner to prevent secondary crashes and reduce congestion and providing information about traffic delays for dissemination.
The Highway Helper will work on an assigned route within the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area but may be assigned other duties in addition to being responsible for the opening and closing of the reversable HOV lanes as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
One year of full-time work experience responding to freeway incidents and performing minor auto repair OR performing automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair (e.g., tow-truck operator, automotive or heavy equipment mechanic, freeway incident responder). A related post-secondary degree such as automotive mechanics, automotive technology, or medium/heavy equipment repair or technology may substitute for 6 months of experience.
A valid Class D Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in Incident Management or related fields such as fire and rescue response. State Patrol, or other public service entities with frequent freeway response.
First-aid and/or CPR certified.
Physical Requirements
Pre-Employment Physical Exam: A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into specific job classifications will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.
