Position Summary:

Spindle Assembly Mechanics utilize mechanical assembly skills to interpret mechanical engineering drawings, bills-of-materials, and work instructions to assemble and test high precision direct-drive and gear-driven machine tool spindle assemblies. Attention to detail and the ability to work with high-precision complex mechanical assemblies is required to be successful. Successful team members enjoy working in mechanical tolerances from 0.010 to 0.00005 of an inch on a daily basis in an environmentally-controlled environment. Spindle Assembly Mechanics work independently on products with the close support of manufacturing engineering, team leads, materials personnel, quality engineers, and supervision.

Job Responsibilities (include, but not limited to):

· Have a high level of mechanical aptitude

· Experience with reading and understanding engineering drawings, models, work instructions and specifications

· Experience working with part and assembly tolerances below 0.010”

· Have a demonstrated understanding of shop math with the ability to calculate stack-ups and match-ground fits

· Can verify component conformance using precision gauges, micrometers and other measuring instruments

· Be organized, systematic and detail oriented

· Can learn from others and follow explicit instruction

· Have good problem solving and troubleshooting

· Be collaborative and team oriented

· Have a high level of accountability and pride in your work

· Align components for assembly, manually or with hoist, and bolts, screws, dowels and hand tools

· Verify alignment and tolerances of moving parts, using measuring instruments, such as dial indicators and thickness gauges

· Assemble, sets up, and operate machine to verify functioning, machine capabilities, and conformance to customer's specifications

· Form and fasten piping, fixtures, and attachments required to service machine with air, water, and oil

· Record and track inspection records during build cycle

Job Responsibilities/qualifications

Level I – Mechanic, Spindle Assembly I

· Proficient in cleaning and washing components

· Verify component conformance using precision gauges, micrometers and other measuring instruments

· Follows and understand inspection sheets

· Can read and understand build instructions

· Collects and organizes components per BOM and pick sheet

· Follows build procedures and best practices

· Identify and communicate build issues with quality, engineering, group leader

· Use power tools in a safe and responsible manner

· Maintain a clean working area, follows 5S standards

· Follows company and department processes and procedures

· Ability to train and demonstrate mechanical assembly competency on trained assemblies

Level II – Mechanic, Spindle Assembly II

Proficient in all of Level I responsibilities as well as:

· Basic operation of trim cell equipment and balancer

· Build/assemble critical subassemblies (requires more attention to detail, precision)

· Ability to build a variety of different families of spindle and/or ball screw assemblies

· Teach/train new hires/contractors

Level III – Mechanic, Spindle Assembly III

Proficient in all of Level I and Level II responsibilities as well as:

· Work with Engineering on development of spindles and build and test procedures

· Identify potential design issues and offer solutions

· Helps to develop best practices

· Ability to work on a large variety of spindles and ball screws or combination of

· Demonstrates a high level of quality control

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

· Demonstrated competency and interest in complex mechanical assembly

· High degree of mechanical aptitude and attention to detail

· Ability to think critically and solve complex mechanical problems

· Knowledge of machine tool spindles is a plus

Preferred Education/Training/Experience:

· High School Diploma or equivalent

· Relevant experience

· Minimum 3 years’ experience working with precision assemblies
