Responsibilities

Position Summary:

A research technician position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Chia-Lung Wu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Center for Musculoskeletal Research. The Wu lab utilizes bioengineering, cellular biology, next-generation sequencing techniques and genome editing tools, complemented by animal models to uncover mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal tissue development and disease pathogenesis

This position is responsible for lab management, human tissue harvest and sample processing, molecular biology skills (PCR, qRT-PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, etc.), cell culture skills (mammalian cell culture), excellent organizational skills, and careful attention to detail. Interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Excellent organization skills and time management. Must be willing to work with mice and discarded human surgical tissues. Familiar with Microsoft Office software.

Hours of the position are 9:00am – 5:30pm Monday through Friday (flexible), work on limited weekends (very rarely) may be required.

Opportunities exist to learn bioinformatic experimental design and analyses including spacial transcriptomics, RNA-seq (bulk and single-cell), ATAC-seq, and ChiP-seq. This position also offers mentoring opportunities and co-authorship on published manuscripts as well as opportunities to work with Orthopaedic surgeons.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Collect human tissues from the Operating Room under the guidance of surgeons

  • Maintain the laboratory management including placing orders and electronic lab item inventory.

  • Assist rodent recovery surgery and Isolate rodent tissues for molecular biology and histological analyses.

  • Performs molecular biological histological techniques including: PCR, qRT-PCR, ELISA, Western blots, microtome sectioning

  • Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook, conduct routine data analysis and interpretation.

  • General Laboratory Safety: Ensures lab safety requirements are up-to-date and implemented.

  • Supervise and trains new lab members: any new rotating/permanent graduate students, as well as new post-doctoral candidates and visiting scientists requiring training in laboratory methods and procedures.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED and 1 year experience performing basic sampling, monitoring or research activities, compiling and collecting data and preparing reports required;

  • OR, Associate's degree in Health Science, Biology, Chemistry or other science related field of study preferred;

  • OR equivalent combination of education and experience required

  • Practical experience in cellular and molecular biology in the context of pre-clinical models preferrede.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements and scientific methods required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $19.96 - $27.94 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
