University of Rochester Research Technician I, Biomedical Genetics in Rochester, New York
POSITION SUMMARY:
The individual will be part of a research team working to understand the development of new treatments for a genetic neurological disease that affects young children. Duties will include laboratory work related in the field of neurological disease. Our approaches use a varietry of animal models developed in our laboratories. The individual will perform colony management, genotying and behavioral testing. With an excellent track record in placing prior team members, our lab and this position are uniquely suited as a launching point for further education in research (PhD) or medicine (MD), and enables entry into a future career in regenerative medicine (both academia and industry).
Procedures performed and equipment used :
Ataxia telangietasia model mouse colony maintenance, genotyping, histology. Tissue dissection, cell isolation and purification, cell culture procedures and genetic manipulation of cells. RNA isolation and RT-QPCR, protein isolation, gel electrophoresis, image capture and analysis (CX5), immunofluorescent analyses. No involvement in the assessment, treatment or care of patients is involved with this work.
Supervision :
This position reports to Dr. Margot Mayer-Proschel, Ph.D and to Dr. Mark Noble, Ph.D.. After a period of initial guidance and training, this position requires that the individual be able to execute experiments independently, analyze data, and help troubleshoot results. This person will also occasionally help train and/or guide others in existing lab techniques.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Helps to maintain mouse animal colonies: routine animal mating and husbandry logs, genotyping of offspring, tissue harvest and histology.
Plans and performs a variety of cellular and molecular experiments and analyses including but not limited to: analysis of cell division and survival, gene expression analysis, protein expression analysis, treatment of mice and analysis of changes in tissue structure in the brain.
Performs routine immunohistochemical analyses of rodent neural tissues and analysis of mouse motor function using automated gait analysis.
Maintains detailed lab journal. Records and calculates results. Presents data in prescribed formats.
Extracting from data, literature searches and existing resources to come up with reasoning to interpret experimental observations or problems that may be encountered. Uses theoretical knowledge to trouble shoot experiments and equipment malfunctions. Independence in problem solving is highly encouraged.
Performs general laboratory duties such as preparing reagents and re-stocking supplies and maintenance of cryopreservation systems. Helps to ensure laboratory compliance for biosafety, EHS and fire inspections. Other job duties and tasks as assigned.
Provides assistance and training for incoming students.
Participates in lab and research meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED required.
BA/BS in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field preferred.
Or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
One year experience performing basic sampling, monitoring, or research activities, compiling and collecting data, and preparing reports preferred.
Highly motivated, ability to multitask, good organizational abilities, and ability to work well as part of a team preferred.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication preferred.

Pay Range
Pay Range: $18.65 - $26.11 Hourly
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
