University of Rochester Pre-Certified Pharmacy Technician in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The main responsibility of pre-certified technicians in training will be to train in the role of a pharmacy technician and prepare to pass the PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and becoming a Certified Pharmacy Technician. This will include hands on training in the employee¿s main work area. Within the first 6 months of employment, new employees with no previous pharmacy experience will enter into the Pharmacy Technician University (PTU) program, which will include didactic learning, simulations, and experiential rotations, and is typically completed in 12 weeks after passing the final exam. New employees with previous pharmacy experience may discuss an alternate pathway to certification with the Pharmacy Education Administrator. The goal is to move employees into a Certified Pharmacy Technician position within 12 months of employment. Responsibilities and tasks are consistent with state, federal and local regulations, consistent with the functions of a pharmacy technician.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Medication Preparation:

  • Train and participate in medication preparation activities. This may include, but is not limited to: Preparing medication order based on requests or recipes; Obtaining Correct medication; Determining the number of doses required for the defined time period; Packaging medications in accordance with applicable laws; Completing logs where required; Utilizing safety check procedures where required; Operates and maintains automated system or technology as training allows; Performs medication re-packaging processes where applicable to meet patient care needs or stocking requirements.

Medication Delivery:

  • Train and participate in efficient medication delivery activities. This may include, but is not limited to: Utilizing pneumatic tube system; Hand delivering patient medications; Documentation and for transfer and tracking of medications as required.

Medication Storage and Inventory Management:

  • Train and participate in medication storage and inventory management activities. This may include, but is not limited to: Stocking medication areas appropriately, including automated systems where applicable; Rotating stock effectively, checking expiration dates to minimize waste, and removing expiring medications from the area;

Customer Service:

  • Train and participate in customer service activities related to the main pharmacy work area. This may include, but is not limited to: Employs courtesy and uses constructive communication with pharmacy colleagues, customers, patients, and all hospital staff; Triaging phone calls and handling medication requests appropriately, deferring all clinical decisions to a pharmacist for follow up; Utilizes effective service recovery techniques to troubleshoot and solve problems that may arise in the medication use system, and communicating resolution to appropriate staff in a timely manner; Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.

Preparation for PTCB Certification:

  • This is typically completed through completion of the 12-week PTU program. During this program, employees will complete didactic, simulation, and experiential training under the Pharmacy Education Administrator. Completes all assigned computer-based learning modules in a timely manner, organizing study materials and completing quizzes as required. Any questions should be brought to the attention of the program administrator or preceptor in a timely manner. Attends and completes all assigned experiential rotations as part of the PTU. This will include ambulatory and acute care experiences; overseen by a preceptor at each site. The employee is expected to be engaged, ask questions, and participate in all activities assigned at the site consistent with Pharmacy Technician duties and responsibilities. Completes all assigned simulation tasks, observed and graded by a preceptor of the program. Employee should be prepared for all simulations by reviewing the available material and training/study guides prior to the live simulation. Works efficiently and limits distractions and downtime while completing course work. Keeps unapproved absences to a minimum, and ensures all missed course work is made up in a timely manner. Reviews, understands and follows all policies and procedures applicable to employment at URMC and enrollment in PTU as outlined during orientation to the program. A new employee with at least 500 hours of previous pharmacy experience can work with the Pharmacy Education Administrator to participate in an alternate pathway to become certified. This pathway includes self-study sitting for the PTCE within an agreed upon time frame

Other Responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or GED required. Be enrolled in the URMC ASHP accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program (PTTP) required or become certified through an alternate method within 6 months of employment. Previous work experience in health care or another fast-paced environment preferred. Must be at least eighteen years of age at the time of application. Upon completion of the program (or alternate pathway) be eligible to register for the PTCB certification exam. Required to pass the PTCB Certification Exam within 180 days of PTU completion.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $18.00 - $23.81 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
