The Role

As the company continues to grow we are seeking a Plastics Engineer I. The Plastics Engineer will assist in technical support for changes which involve QuidelOrtho' s supply base for plastic components.Support will predominantly be provided for QuidelOrtho' s injection molded, high volume consumables, but other manufacturing techniques involving plastic raw materials and QuidelOrtho' s low-volume equipment components may also require support. The position will provide technical input to change requests initiated by QuidelOrtho' s suppliers or changes initiated within QuidelOrtho to align with organizational initiatives and continuity of supply of plastic products. The Plastics Engineer will conduct detailed analysis of requests and provide guidance, assistance, and technical solutions to facilitate changes in support of QuidelOrtho' s change control processes and requirements. This individual will monitor changes, attend regular project meetings, process non-conformances, review incoming inspection plans, and work directly with external suppliers. This person is also a support for part quality issues that may occur at the supplier, the manufacturer, or at the customer's site.

This position can be located in Rochester, NY or Raritan, NJ.

The Requirements
  • Manage assigned portions of capital equipment projects within QuidelOrtho' s supply base for consumable products.

  • Support of projects from design/concept phase through qualification and into production-readiness.

  • Execution may involve writing of supplier qualification protocols and reports, and at minimum will involve review and approval of relevant project documentation for conformance to QuidelOrtho requirements.

  • Participate in technical investigation and cross-functional review of unplanned supplier tasks, including supplier nonconformance's and supplier change requests.

  • Support and consult on related QuidelOrtho projects/initiatives which require plastics expertise; areas may include low-volume molds which support equipment manufacture and R&D projects involving new or changed plastic consumable or equipment products.

The Individual

Required:

  • Without BA/BS, 3-5 years applicable plastics industry or similar manufacturing experience.

  • BA/BS with 0-2 years experience

  • MS with no experience

  • Basic understanding and application of standard Engineering/Manufacturing theories, concepts, principles, and techniques in one of the following engineering disciplines: Electrical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering.

  • Able to use standardized test methods to solve a variety of basic technical problems related to the development, testing, validation and maintenance of manufacturing equipment and test fixtures.

  • Familiarity with emerging technology trends.

  • Uses deductive reasoning to solve a variety of basic engineering problems related to calculations, tests, and design details.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of the validation requirements for Medical Devices

  • Working knowledge of injection molding process development (scientific injection molding principles) and familiarity with the plastics industry

  • Capable of tracking a plan for a small project.

  • Uses available tools to maintain an organized workflow and calendar and manage daily tasks.

  • Written and verbal communication is clear and concise. Works with management to select the appropriate media for the target audience.

  • Awareness of some Process Excellence tools and statistical methods

  • Ability to work well within the team environment.

  • Should be able to follow direction from team leaders for deliverables.

  • Sphere of influence is limited to the members of a project team.

  • Determines root cause and implements practical solutions to component-level problems. Example problems: Tolerance Analysis, Component obsolescence (simple substitution)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, insight generation and critical thinking skills.

  • Self-initiator, results driven and action & detail oriented.

  • Required Travel 5-20% primarily domestic and potentially some international.

The Key Working Relationships
  • Internal Partners: Equipment Manufacturing Operators, Quality Engineers, Field Engineers, Customer Service, Warehouse personnel

  • External Partners: Material Suppliers and Customers

The Work Environment

The work environment characteristics are representative of an office environment. Up to 75% of time at desk, standing or sitting extended periods of time. No strenuous physical activity, though occasional light lifting of files and related materials (up to 10 lbs.) is required.

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. At QuidelOrtho, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The salary range for this position is $68,000 to $116,000 and is bonus eligible. QuidelOrtho offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, along with a 401(k) plan, employee assistance program, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, paid time off (including sick time), and paid Holidays. All benefits are non-contractual, and QuidelOrtho may amend, terminate, or enhance the benefits provided, as it deems appropriate.
