8 AM-5 PMResponsibilities
Provides conceptual design, implementation and operational support for networks, including departmental LANs, backbone infrastructure and wide area networks.
Instructs and advises personnel on established standards and provides technical expertise and guidance to ensure optimum efficiency and program progress. Assists in the development of policies and procedures and ensures that documentation is kept current and complete.
Develops design specifications for topologies, electronics and distribution systems from general requirements. May also develop cabling specs based on assigned area or function. Develops physical or virtual segmentation schemes to satisfy various connectivity requirements. Develops, documents and implements standards for all network components.
Specifies or configures special purpose gateways or interfaces as required. Specifies and implements network management systems, both physical and logical. Configures and deploys network management tools to monitor network capacity and maximize network availability.
Plans, organizes and directs the activities of assigned staff. Participates in the selection, training and orientation of engineering team members and provides input on performance. Assists in the development and management of division budget and participates in vendor negotiations.
Develops timelines showing phasing, interdependencies and resource requirements. Translates project phases into discrete work orders for execution by subcontractors (when applicable). Produces bills-of-material as required by construction activities when needed. Produces itemized project cost estimates including labor and materials when needed.
Directs and performs troubleshooting as required to identify root cause for any business impacting events.
Provides on-call coverage to service network interruptions and serves as escalation to other team members in on-call rotations. Documents network topologies and cable plant interconnects. Maintains an inventory of network components. Manages “spares” inventory and maintains records of “hub” and “port” availability.
Participates willingly and effectively in department or user initiated quality improvement projects and works to build value for the organization. Attends technical classes or seminars and reads technical journals appropriate to maintaining skill proficiency. Leads initiatives in new technologies and encourages innovation in other team members.

4-5 years of related telecommunications experience required
2-3 years of supervisory experience required; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Familiarity with network electronics, including optical networking concepts, routers, switches, etc. required.
Familiarity with network management tools, such as Intermapper, Solarwinds, Cisco Prime Infrastructure, Cacti, SNORt or equivelents required.
Familiarity with routing and switching protocols, including Cisco platforms, OSPF/BGP/iBGP and/or TDM, VoIP, SIP/RTP required.
Familiarity with structured cable plant components and techniques for both fiber and copper required.
Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills required.
Thorough knowledge of TCP/IP protocols and addressing required.
