University of Rochester Laboratory Technician III (S) in Rochester, New York

POSITION SUMMARY:

In accordance with broadly-outlined objectives, requirements and approaches, the technician plans and conducts technical procedures, non-routine and complex in nature. The technician will conduct translational research activities involving imaging and staining of immunohistochemistry samples, flow cytometry, genotyping, and other laboratory techniques. Their focus will be on the molecular mechanisms of experimental arthritis, skin fibrosis, vascular dysfunction, and rheumatoid arthritis / scleroderma pathogenesis, under the direct supervision of the PI and/or Sr. Researchers.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Histology. Plans and performs experiments on immunohistochemistry, immunostaining, imaging and tissue histology study. Utilizes laboratory equipment including fluorescence microscope, slide scanners, micropipettes, and oven. Will assist with acquiring samples and processing sections as needed. Keep track of and organize histology samples. Organize the acquired images into figure format for the purpose of manuscripts and grants. Motivated individuals will be able to contribute to manuscript preparation/writing.

  • Flow cytometry. Plan and execute sample collection, preparation, and flow cytometry following provided protocol. Modify/revise protocol as needed after discussion with Sr. Researcher. Utilize flow cytometry core facility for multi-parameter flow cytometric data collection. Perform data analysis on gathered data. Organize the acquired images into figure format for the purpose of manuscripts and grants. Motivated individuals will be able to contribute to manuscript preparation/writing.

  • Genotyping. Plan and perform genotyping of the animal colonies. Genotyping will be done by using techniques such as tissue digestion, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cryo-embedding of tissue samples, and fluorescence imaging of histology slides. Communicate with either the PI or Sr. Researcher in the lab the results. Help with managing the animal colony as needed.

  • In vitro work. Help with cell culture by changing media, passaging cells, and checking cell culture equipment operation. Let Sr. Researcher know if any of the cell culture equipment is not operating properly.

  • Lab maintenance. Keep track of lab supplies and inform the lab manager when in need of ordering more supplies. Autoclave lab items as needed. General lab upkeep.

  • Lab equipment use and upkeep. Ensure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety and Training for Research Laboratory Personnel. Oversee equipment maintenance (including centrifuges, incubators, tissue culture hoods, PCR machines, plate reader, and micropipettes) and train individuals in use of equipment.

  • Other duties as assigned. E.g. daily monitoring of experimental mice.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree or higher required

  • 2-3 years additional specialized experience, education, or combination of experience and education required

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication preferred.

  • Previous experience with animal work, histology, flow cytometry, and/or biochemistry is preferred

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 16.49 - $ 23.08 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
