University of Rochester Laboratory Technician III (S) in Rochester, New York

POSITION SUMMARY:

This research position is in the lab of Dr. Michael Bulger in the Department of Pediatrics. The project involves the investigation of apoptotic-related processes that contribute to chromatin condensation during the final stages of erythroid maturation. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: ordering and preparation of lab materials and reagents, organization of the laboratory, preparation and cell culture, virus preparation and cell infections, preparation and staining of cells for flow cytometry, DNA subcloning and other basic molecular and cell biology techniques as indicated for given experiments. Maintenance of a small mouse colony will also be part of the candidate’s responsibilities. The candidate will work independently but under the guidance of the PI, and will have the opportunity to organize and troubleshoot experiments to the extent of his/her ability. Participation in regularly scheduled lab meetings is required.

This position reports to Michael Bulger, Ph.D.

TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

To provide technical support and execution of experiments to better understand the contribution of apoptosis-related caspase cascades to late-stage erythroid maturation. Specific duties will include but are not limited to:

  1. Culture of immortalized cell lines, including transfections and viral infections.

  2. Preparation of cells and staining for flow cytometry analysis and microscopy.

  3. Other molecular and cell biology techniques: western blotting, isolation of RNA and DNA, DNA subcloning and mutagenesis, and PCR.

  4. General lab maintenance including ordering and organization, and adherence to lab regulatory policies. Other duties as assigned.

  5. Participate in regular lab meetings, and regular meetings with Dr. Bulger.

REQUIREMENTS:

Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

BA/BS degree in the biological sciences is preferred. Prior laboratory experience and familiarity with general biological techniques - making solutions/buffers, sterile techniques, cell culture methods, and basic molecular biology techniques is desired. Candidate must have excellent command of oral and written English language, strong interpersonal skills, and be able to work in a collaborative team environment. Computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are necessary. Candidate should be highly organized and detail/documentation oriented.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Laboratory duties will require working in a modern biomedical research facility in the vicinity of properly contained chemical and biological materials.

  2. All procedures and facilities conform to federal, local and institutional safety and ethical guidelines.

  3. Full time, 40 hours/week. Standard daytime hours are expected but will vary depending on needs of the lab. Occasional night and weekend hours may be required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 16.49 - $ 23.08 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
