Monroe Community College Healthy Hero Senior Counselor (2025) in Rochester, New York

Function of Position:

The Senior Counselor is responsible for supporting and participating in core and non-core programs and experiences for children in a small group setting. They will be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in a group. The incumbent will assist in the facilitation of high quality outdoor educational and recreational experiences for participants that focus on the Healthy Hero Summer Camp program core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, the development of healthy lifestyle skills and supporting the academic success of the children. To succeed as a Senior Counselor, a candidate should be upbeat, decisive and responsible. Candidates must be organized, possess good communication skills and enjoy working with children. Senior Counselor will work closely with a Junior Counselor, as well as their CIT worker, SEL advisor and Group Coordinator assigned to their group of campers. Senior Counselor will serve as mentor to Junior Counselor and assist them in any issues related to camp duties.

*This is a temporary, grant funded position.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Implement a weekly schedule for your camp group.

  • Support and participate in a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, music, games, opening and dismissal procedures, swimming, initiatives, math class, ELA classes, music classes, health classes, breakfast, lunch and other events, as assigned. For some Junior Counselors, this includes time spent on the bus.

  • Identify and report camper behavior issues.

  • Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter.

  • Report concerns of campers' experiences to Camp Leadership.

  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.

  • Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.

  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes, but is not limited to, being responsible for your campers' safety and location at all times.

  • Develop an understanding of leadership and skills necessary to be an effective camp counselor.

  • Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area/body of water, know/review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately.

  • Memorize emergency procedures and enforce all camp rules.

  • Participate in Camp training and orientation.

  • Ability to take direction from Camp Leadership.

  • Ability to work well with other staff members of all levels of camp.

  • Ability to NOT use personal telephone from 8am-3:30pm outside of breaks and lunch every day

  • Strong age-appropriate organizational and communication skills.

  • Responsible for complying with all uniform requirements each day

Required Physical Qualifications:

  • Must have the physical ability to participate in camp activities that include, but are not limited to, hiking, assisting children in shallow water during swimming lessons, team building initiatives, physical games, music class, health, math and ELA class, and various sport activities.

  • Must be capable of carrying loads of up to 20 pounds and able to traverse uneven terrain without undue exertion.

  • Work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.

  • Perform essential program support to camp activities that may include, but are not limited to the following activities: semi - reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, working overhead, and at ground level, twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs, and lying on stomach and/or back.

  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks outdoors in varying climate (heat, wind, humidity, rain).

  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.

  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to ride the Healthy Hero Summer Camp bus either to or from camp from one of the six bus stops located throughout the City of Rochester.

  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

    Additional Information:

Dates of temporary assignment: MCC Healthy Hero Camps operation: June 30, 2025 - August 1, 2025. (Closed July 4, 2025). The Co-Director of Academics will work each of these days.

Hours: Camp Hours are 7:45am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Salary: $3,000
