The Opportunity

As QuidelOrtho continues to grow we are seeking a Director, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering for in vitro diagnostic instrument development who will provide functional leadership to a diverse team of multi-disciplinary individuals with responsibilities of mechanical and electrical design for QuidelOrtho's instrument platforms.

This position reports to the Head of HW Engineering Research & Development and is located onsite in Rochester, NY.

The Responsibilities

  • Leads multi-disciplinary teams that delivers new instrument hardware and sustainment of current product portfolio. Manages teams located in Rochester, NY and other global R&D sites to ensure development projects are executed in alignment with QuidelOrtho's growth strategy.
  • Responsible for growing Mechanical and Electrical Engineering R&D capabilities, including people, processes, tools, and methods, and deploying these resources and capabilities across multiple projects in the portfolio.
  • Develops multi-generational product roadmaps in collaboration with Architecture, Systems Engineering, Software, Business Units, and other peer functions.
  • Develops and deploys a talent strategy focused on differentiated capabilities to accelerate innovation in a diverse, global team.
  • Enables an engaged working environment by motivating, mentoring for personal growth, and entrepreneurship. This will include managing strategic relationships for workforce augmentation, and external design services.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders and external design partners to deliver product features that improve our customer experience, product performance and safety.
  • Supports business operating plan development. Leads preparation of technical and cost inputs for all approved projects and directs resources to achieve all operating plan commitments.
  • Develops annual functional initiatives for continuous improvement. This includes managing departmental SOP's and technology standards in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains a positive culture and environment of high expectations and accountability while driving functional excellence across all teams. This includes recruitment, staffing, succession planning, employee development, education, and training activities for the department

The Individual

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline is required; Masters preferred.
  • Minimum 12+ years relevant experience required with a track record of delivering products in the medical and/or diagnostics industry, preferably in the Clinical Laboratory segment.
  • Must have 8+ years in directing and/or managing engineering teams.
  • Must have technical background with hands-on experience in following areas: Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, leading ME/EE teams, Requirements Management, Product Integration, Risk Management, Clinical Diagnostics, Verification and Validation strategies.
  • Must have strong customer focus to ensure that the experience delivered by the product is consistent with expectations.
  • Experience in managing external design services is required
  • Must have the ability to drive product innovation and develop a global workforce to deliver innovative solutions, in a highly regulated environment.
  • Proven record of building and driving high performance teams with a strong focus on employees' professional growth is required.
  • Experience in hardware development utilizing an agile development process, with hands-on experience using an Agile/Scrum methodology to produce and release products is required.
  • Must have the ability to lead and thrive in the matrix management structure.
  • Results orientation: Must be capable of making commitments, setting priorities, and delivering results in time and on budget.
  • Situational Adaptability: Sees ahead clearly; can anticipate future concerns
  • Develops and maintains effective cross functional relationships and is capable of quickly earning trust and respect.
  • Strong overall business and communication skills, including executive presentation skills and business financial acumen.
  • Must have the ability to travel 10% both domestic and international

The Working Environment

The work environment characteristics are representative of a manufacturing, laboratory, or warehouse environment and include handling of viral and bacterial hazards, potentially hazardous chemicals, as well as infectious or potentially infectious bodily fluids, tissues, and samples. Up to 75% of the time at desk, standing or sitting extended periods of time. Flexible work hours to meet project deadlines.

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary range for this position is $150,000 to $210,000. QuidelOrtho offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, along with a 401(k) plan, employee assistance program, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, paid time off (including sick time), and paid Holidays. All benefits are non-contractual, and QuidelOrtho may amend, terminate, or enhance the benefits provided, as it deems appropriate.
