Klein Steel Service Controller in Rochester, New York

General Description:

The controller position is accountable for the accounting operations of the company. This includes the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk. The controller is also responsible for enhancing the accuracy of the company's reported financial results and ensuring that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • A/R

  • Establish and monitor compliance with credit policies

  • Oversight of collections, risk assessment, and reconciliation of customer accounts

  • Assist in the management of major customer receivable issues

  • Review of bad debt reserve analysis

  • A/P

  • Establish policies on payment terms, including discounts taken

  • Ensure company policies are compliant with regulations, including 1099 reporting and Unclaimed Property

  • Review of cash disbursements, including check signing and wire payments

  • Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Oversight of month-end close

  • Oversight of general ledger maintenance

  • Oversight and review of internal financial statement preparation and distribution

  • Preparation and/or review of ad hoc reporting requests

  • Income Tax

  • Oversight of quarterly tax reporting payments

  • Provide assistance and information to external tax accountants

  • Respond to tax notices and agency inquiries

  • Review of deferred tax calculations

  • 401(k)

  • Assist HR in audit preparation and management and Plan non-discrimination testing

  • Assist HR in the oversight of the Plan’s financial compliance

  • Review and timely filing of 5500 reporting

  • Plan financial statements

  • Timeliness of contributions to the Plan

  • Participate on Plan Oversight Committee

  • Insurance

  • Prepare annual renewal information, and other insurance applications, as needed

  • Oversight of the COI process and requests

  • Review monthly loss ratio reporting

  • Oversight of the annual Worker’s Compensation audit

  • Budget

  • Creation of annual budget and any applicable forecast revisions

  • Review of monthly actual vs. budget reporting

  • Fixed Assets

  • Establish and monitor compliance with capital expenditure policy

  • Establish and review of depreciation lives and methods

  • Oversight of fixed asset software maintenance and reconciliation

  • Oversight of fixed asset internal audits

  • Audit Coordination

  • Financial statement audit

  • Bank audit

  • Insurance

  • IRS/State, as necessary

  • Banking

  • Oversight of set-up and maintenance of banking software modules in accordance with company policies such as Positive Pay, ACH monitor, and Image Lockbox

  • Responsible for corporate credit card issuance/monitoring/issues

  • Review of quarterly covenant calculations

  • Review of borrowing base certificates

  • Sales Tax

  • Ensure compliance with regulations in multiple states

  • Oversight of reporting and payment of sales tax

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Finance supervisors in accordance with the organization’s policies and with applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training team members; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining team members; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or related field required.

Master’s degree (M.A.) preferred or equivalent, or four to ten years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant) preferred

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or team members of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundaments of the plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of accounting software, database software, spreadsheet software, and word processing software.
