University of Rochester Archivist I in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Edward G. Miner Library, History of Medicine Department at the University of Rochester Medical Center seeks a Centennial Project Archivist to serve as the department's primary research liaison for Centennial projects and research. The medical center will celebrate its centennial beginning September 2025. The institutional archival collections held by the History of Medicine Department are essential in documenting the academic medical center’s history. This fixed-term project position will play a vital role in meeting the increased demands to access and engage these unique historical materials.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serve as the department's primary research liaison for Centennial projects and research

  2. Provide support to the campus community in conducting research on campus history through provision of professional reference services and identifying quality information sources

  3. Develop and publish an electronic research guide (libguide) describing History of Medicine department holdings relevant to Centennial research efforts

  4. Use independent professional judgment and expertise to conduct original research, design, and curation of Centennial displays and exhibits

  5. Work collaboratively with Centennial planning team to support Centennial related communications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, or other advanced degree required.

  • 2 years of processing, arrangement and description experience

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Knowledge of best practices in handling and preservation of archival material required.

  • Experience working with institutional archives and collections preferred.

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to use considerable judgment and initiative; demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work; great attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as a team member and to work effectively and collegially across units and departments.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work, acting with initiative, good judgment, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and tight deadlines, especially before exhibition openings.

  • Ability to lift and move 40lb boxes on and off shelves.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $24.91 - $34.87 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
