Genesee & Wyoming Accounting Intern (Summer 2025) in Rochester, New York

Description

SUMMARY:We are seeking a motivated intern to join our team for a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and contribute to the daily operations of our department. The intern reports to the Manager of Technical Accounting, Consolidations, and Reporting. This is an in-person internship and is based in our Rochester, NY office. The internship is full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer semester (June, July, August), with a pay rate of $18 per hour.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • General ledger responsibility for assigned entities, including timely closing monthly and producing all required management reports.

  • Performing detailed trial balance preparation, analysis, and reconciliation.

  • Analyzing and reconciling accounts.

  • Assisting with the preparation of financial statements and ad-hoc reporting.

  • Preparing and ensuring the accuracy of accounting records.

  • Compliance with internal controls.

  • Preparation for and participation in internal and external audits.

  • Communication with other departments and regional personnel, including first-line regional financial contact and support for assigned regions.

  • Performance of other duties, as required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency in O365 (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics (D365) preferred but not required.

  • Strong focus on accuracy and attention to detail in all tasks.

  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and maintain objectivity.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse teams.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
