Responsibilities

Colon and Rectal Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to work as part of a multidisciplinary team managing surgical patients who are undergoing a variety of colon and rectal surgical procedures. This is a dynamic surgical practice renowned for excellence, innovation and performing complex procedures. NP/PAs are valued members within colon/rectal surgery and teamwork is essential to meeting the needs of the patients for whom we provide care.

The Colon Rectal Surgery team has 11 surgeons, and 9 NP/PAs currently in the inpatient/outpatient practice. Due to growth of the practice including an additional operating room the team is seeking to add a first assist to the NP / PA practice. The role will include comprehensive assessments of patients within the preop holding, intra-operative, and post anesthesia care unit.

This unique position in Colon Rectal Surgery allows the NP or PA to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary care team including: surgeons, nurses, residents, fellows, and other allied health professionals.

A high level of autonomy and ability to educate others is expected.

Hours include 10–12-hour shifts on weekdays with one day off during the week to mirror the surgeon’s operating schedule. The NP/PA will partner with a primary and a secondary surgeon after training is completed. Occasionally, there will be opportunities to cover other colorectal surgeons within the division as needed. Currently there are no holidays, evenings, or weekend responsibilities.

Qualifications

License or Certification

Masters prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Current Minnesota RN license and certification as an FNP, ACNP or ANP.

Or graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota State Board of Medical Practice.

Must be eligible for DEA registration.

First assist/OR experience preferred

Additional Qualifications

Completion of BLS course required and ACLS preferred. One to two years of clinical and/or surgical experience preferred, but not required. Consultant specific training will be provided.

First Assistant certification for nurse practitioners is preferred prior to job acceptance if not currently certified, the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery will reimburse the First Assistant Certification within the first 2 years of employment in this role.

Ability to problem-solve, work independently, and assume responsibility for patient interaction. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills for effective interactions with patients, family members, and colleagues in multiple disciplines.
