MnDOT District 6 may fill 1 summer Land Surveyor student worker position located in Rochester.

Surveys (Rochester – 1 position)

Enjoy working outside? A [Student Worker\Seasonal Worker) in Surveys would work on a variety of sites to prepare for future construction projects and to assist in staking current construction projects. They would learn how a construction project is designed and the mapping efforts needed to produce a final plan. They would also see how a project is built and the role of a Survey crew on a site. Field Surveying also includes all efforts to define property boundaries. This task includes in-office researching and interpreting existing surveys followed by field measuring of physical evidence to assist Licensed Surveyors in boundary determinations.

This process would include working with existing surveys, construction plans, survey notes, coordinate systems, horizontal and vertical control points, bridge working points and more. They would be exposed to Survey grade GPS units, precision total stations and high-definition laser scanning. This would involve physical activity, pounding stakes, digging holes, and carrying survey tools. Typically, they would work with a single lead technical worker.

Typical Hours (Monday-Thursday) 6:00AM - 4:30PM.

*This job class noted above is Student Worker Para Professional. However, vacancy may be filled at the Student Worker Para Professional Senior job class based on educational status and history. Salary will be paid commensurate with classification.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years old or older

  • Knowledge and application of advanced mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

  • Knowledge of computer software used in testing and design work and ability to use windows based operating systems.

  • Ability to understand technical documents and follow instructions.

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled or enrolling within three months as a full-time student (six semester/9 quarter credits) in a post-secondary or graduate program with a GPA of at least 2.0.

  • Candidates with at least two (2) years of post-secondary education in the program area in which they are employed will qualify for the student worker paraprofessional senior classification.

  • Valid Class D Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in Land Surveying, Geometrics, Cartography, Mapping Sciences, Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

  • Full-time student with a GPA of at least 3.0.

Physical Requirements

  • Some of the jobs are physical in nature and will require a pre-employment physical.

  • Weather elements:May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.
