Responsibilities

The Graduate Research Employment Program (GREP) is a post-baccalaureate program for participants with an interest in biomedical research. The primary purpose of GREP is to provide a post-baccalaureate laboratory research experience that applies skills in science, technology, engineering or math to biomedical research including basic science or translational research. GREP participants gain research experience that may help them to decide on a career path related to biomedical research. In addition, the experience can increase the participants’ competitiveness and preparation for the next step in their career. These goals are achieved by providing:

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with a strong background in science, technology, engineering, or math

• Interest in biomedical research

• Minimum GPA of 3.0

• Authorization to work and remain in the United States, without necessity for Mayo Clinic sponsorship now, or in the future (for example, be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident, refugee or asylee)

• A current transcript submission required – unofficial transcripts will be accepted

• A 1-2 sentence statement of research interest

The GREP position will be in the lab of Evanthia Galanis, M.D. Dr. Galanis’ lab focuses on the use of oncolytic viruses, primarily measles virus (MV) and engineered derivatives like MV-s-NAP, for the treatment of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, synovial sarcoma, and glioblastoma. Combination strategies including the use of checkpoint inhibitors, such as anti-PD-1, and small molecule inhibition of tumor microenvironment components are a top priority. Dr. Galanis is also involved in several ongoing clinical trials using measles virus or MV-s-NAP.

Executes experimental studies in support of lab goals and grant commitments on projects related to the treatment of glioblastoma with measles virus and immunomodulatory agents. Assists in the planning, design, and modifications of experiments. Collects data, records, and summarizes results, and maintains detailed records. Techniques to be used include BSL-2+ aseptic cell culture, flow cytometry, CyTOF, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry, rodent handling, mouse surgery techniques, stereotactic intracranial cell implantation and virus treatment, mouse blood collection, dissection, and other techniques as needed. Training will be provided. Understanding of oncolytic virotherapy encouraged. Previous experience working with mice, in vivo glioblastoma models, or intracranial implantations/injections preferred.
