The Director of Power Resources provides executive level strategy, direction, and leadership to the Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) organization and management, guidance, administration, and oversight to the Power Resources and Facilities and Fleet business unit. The Director reports to the RPU General Manager and is an integral member of the leadership team. The Director maintains independent judgment, discretion, and initiative while effectively collaborating across the utility to carry out the organization’s strategic plans, goals, and objectives.

The 2024 pay range established for the RPU Director of Power Resources position is $160,360 - $229,086 and will depend on the qualifications of the successful candidate.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director is responsible for planning, constructing, operating, and maintaining the energy supply infrastructure. This position negotiates and administers contracts and agreements related to power supply, including the purchase, sale, and marketing of wholesale power, long-range resource planning and development, environmental compliance strategies and implementation, fuel procurement, technical specification development and contract administration, commodity trading strategies, and implementation of wholesale energy and capacity sales. The Director of Power Resources is also responsible for employee and plant safety and planning, operating, and maintaining RPU’s facilities and vehicle fleet.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Progressively responsible experience in a utility setting with at least ten years of combined experience in any of the following areas: power plant management, commodity trading, utility finance and rate-making theory, contract administration, resource planning, market operations, transaction development, and power project engineering. Leadership experience, including at least three years of management directing professional and support staff, is essential. Public utility experience is highly beneficial, with knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a power production facility required. Strong business acumen, including financial expertise, is essential. Effective change management coupled with experience leading and managing complex environments is ideal. Knowledge of and interest in sustainable and/or renewable energy is preferred.

A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with power option, mechanical engineering, economics, finance, business administration, accounting, or related field is required. An equivalent combination of experience and education that enables success as the Director of Power Resources will be considered.
