GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Asphalt Plant Superintendent is responsible for the overall plant operations with a safety first priority. This includes the production of quality products, scheduling and supervision of plant personnel, controlling costs and production metrics, maintaining plant facilities and property, ensuring compliance with environmental and other permit requirements. The chosen candidate will also be responsible for tracking and explaining monthly cost and production metric variances to upper management. Provide supervision to plant personnel.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform daily equipment, walk around and site inspections to identify and correct any unsafe conditions and keep equipment properly maintained, conduct toolbox meetings daily/weekly.

  • Identify appropriate material to produce quality asphalt or concrete material per job specifications.

  • Communicate with quality control personnel and make required adjustments to material blends.

  • Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) and work with difficult people under high stress situations. Self-motivated, team-player with good interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive customer relations and act courteous/respectful of others.

  • Lead personnel at plant and work with dispatch to schedule drivers. Monitor plant site to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.

  • Accurately complete plant reports and other documentation as needed.

  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed, bring problems to the attention of the superintendent, safety director or HR manager.

  • Supervise plant crews to obtain top-quality workmanship, efficiency, employee satisfaction, morale, communication, commitment, teamwork and pride.

  • Facilitate repairs and maintenance needs on all major pieces of equipment on assigned jobs.

  • Relate to the public and to customers in a professional, courteous and respectful manner, appropriately responding to their complaints.

  • May repair machinery, using handtools, power tools, and welding equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Moves controls on panelboard or control board to heat, dry, and mix ingredients to produce asphalt paving materials; to weigh and mix aggregate, cement, and water to produce concrete; or to control feeding, crushing, and sifting machinery in sand and gravel plant.

  • Observes gauges, dials, and operation of machinery to ensure conformance to processing specifications.

  • Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet)

  • The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.

  • The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

  • The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.

  • The ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations).

  • The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.

  • The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).

  • The ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs occasionally

  • The ability to work occasionally in confined spaces

  • The ability to work occasionally at heights up to 100 feet

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of types of construction materials;

  • One year of experience in asphalt plant production and/or operations.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

  • Effective communication skills;

  • Experience and training must include methods, techniques, equipment and hands-on experience in a supervisory position

  • High School diploma/GED. Some vocational or college preferred

  • Knowledge of the capability and proper operation of asphalt plants

  • Must have a thorough knowledge of MSHA/OSHA/DEQ/EPA regulations and regulatory agencies

  • Knowledge of asphalt designs, mixes, and grades

  • Understand how to operate and maintain fixed and mobile equipment.

  • Must have computer skills, good leadership and excellent interpersonal skills
