This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Early Career Environmental Scientist for our Ridgeland, Mississippi office. Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the collection, identification, and compiling of observational and spatial data concerning a variety of biological, physical, and earth sciences. Provides local assistance for the development of processes and infrastructure relating to water supply, air emission, pollution control, cultural impact, and preserving the quality of the environment by identifying, controlling, and preventing disruption to environmental systems and species caused by human activity. Generates accurate and concise documentation, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

Your Impact

  • Oversee soil borings and groundwater monitoring well installations

  • Collect soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, air, and soil gas samples in support of site investigation, remedies, and pilot studies from soil and groundwater remediation systems

  • Collect data in complex field situations with supervision and document field activities

  • Perform other field exploration, inspection, testing, and analyses using equipment and instrumentation

  • Prepare components of site investigation reporting including work plans, data summaries, calculations, tables, figures, charts, drawings and report text

  • Assist Project Managers and project teams, ensuring effective client communication and relations

  • Organize field work, assign tasks, and work with other staff specialists and technicians to complete assignments

  • Follow company safety policies and procedures, site safety standards, and permit requirements

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • BS or BA in Geology, Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering, or related technical field.

  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Familiarity with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products., as well as awareness of mitigation programs.

  • Familiarity with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.

  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, math principles, predictive models, and tools.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical/ Fit for Duty Exam.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
