Boehringer Ingelheim Senior Scientist, Biophysical Developability Assessments in Ridgefield, Connecticut

Description

Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a talented and innovative Senior Scientist to join our Biotherapeutics Discovery department located at our Ridgefield, CT facility. This position offers an exciting opportunity to engage in the discovery of biotherapeutics for unmet medical needs. As an integral member of the New Biologic Expression, Purification, and Characterization (NBEPC) group, specifically within the Characterization team, your main responsibilities will include planning, conducting, and analyzing biophysical assessments that evaluate the inherent protein attributes and physicochemical stability of drug candidates. Your expertise in biophysical characterization techniques such as light scattering, liquid chromatography, calorimetry, and/or structural biology will be crucial. A strong grasp of physical chemical/thermodynamic principles underpinning protein structure, interactions, and stability is also essential. As a subject matter expert in project teams, you provide support in planning, generating, and understanding CMC attributes and process parameters. You will also help drive a culture of excellence through successful project outcomes, advancement of scientific understanding, empowerment of staff, and increased connection with the field through external conferences, publications, and collaborations within the academia and industry.

Duties & Responsibilities

This is a lab-based position with at least 50% of time spent designing, performing, and optimizing biophysical assessments; the ideal candidate will aspire to and grow into more managerial responsibilities.

• Perform stage appropriate biophysical developability assessments, including biophysical screening of protein attributes, assessing solution-state behavior, stability, and forced degradation; interpret and present findings to other Biotherapeutics Discovery colleagues.

• Develop novel analytical methodologies and evaluate new technologies to improve the overall developability strategy and enhance value.

• Be familiar with current state of the art biophysical techniques that can be applied to investigate complex molecules.

• Demonstrate clear understanding of research team goals and work effectively toward achieving them; be able to participate as group representative or co-leader on multiple project teams and contribute to defining expertise-related aspects of overall program goals, with a focus on providing in-depth CMC insights.

• Demonstrate independent and critical thinking, e.g. by anticipating potential problems and taking preventative action. Ability to identify opportunities for process improvement and involve others to foster a collaborative environment. Propose and implement new experimental designs and concepts that are tailored to a research environment and thus contribute to the research objectives and reflect expert knowledge.

• Create a culture of excellence through continual process improvement, scientific curiosity, and empowerment; develop and maintain outside visibility through conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

• Independently communicate results through clear technical reports, internal and external oral presentations, and publications; present responsibly and defend own work at scientific meetings; deliver project updates to senior level management

• Comply with all applicable regulations; ensures that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; maintain proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies

Requirements

• Requires a PhD in related field or equivalent industry experience in related field.

• Considerable experience with biophysical characterization techniques such as light scattering, liquid chromatography, calorimetry, and/or structural biology

• Advanced knowledge of theory behind molecular driving forces.

• Requires project coordination ability and excellent written and oral presentation skills.

Desired Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

• Post Doc or two (2) to three (3) years of industry experience is desired.

• Familiarity with additional techniques to look at protein-protein interactions is a plus (ITC, Fluorescence)

• Familiarity with laboratory automation, high-throughput process development and digitalization is a plus.

• Requires international travel and collaboration.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

• Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)

• Must be 18 years of age or older

Compensation Data

This position offers a base salary typically between $120,000 and $205,000.  The position may be eligible for a role specific variable or performance-based bonus and or other compensation elements.  For an overview of our benefits please click here.
