Job Summary of Roles and Responsibilities

Power Engineers, Inc. is actively seeking an experienced, energetic, self-starting team member with a strong physical design background to perform engineering/design activities for electrical substations. Classified as a Substation Physical Designer, this individual will work with our Substation design teams out of our Power Delivery Substation Department in our Richmond, Virginia office. A hybrid and/or in-office work environment is preferred however, a remote role may be considered and is dependent on the individual’s level of experience and proven ability to work remotely.

Responsibilities

The Physical Designer will share responsibility with the rest of the department to produce a product consistent with POWER’s mission statement and our culture. The Designer is expected to support the group in achieving the goals of the department, maintain POWER’s high-quality standards, promote internal teamwork and meet the needs of our clients. This position is also responsible assisting with developing, maintaining and strengthening client relationships within the region.

  • Perform and direct others in the detailed design of medium to extra high voltage substations including, but not limited to

  • Station physical layouts

  • Sections/Elevations

  • Cable and conduit plans and details

  • Ground grid design and details

  • Foundation plans and details

  • Structural plans and details

  • Control enclosure design and details

  • Lightning protection plans

  • Yard lighting plans

  • Bills of Materials

  • Inter-discipline coordination activities

  • Specify and select substation equipment

  • Contribute to substation equipment specifications

  • Construction support

  • Site visits

  • Perform QA/QC for deliverables to clients

  • Support proposal development

  • Support project budgeting, project scheduling and project reporting

  • Support the mentorship and training of other team members

  • Shall understanding and adhere to client standards and processes while working individually or within a team to complete complex and technically challenging designs

  • Occasional travel

Required Education/Experience

  • Associate degree or equivalent technical education

  • Three (3) or more years of experience in substation physical design

  • Experience with AutoCAD (version 2016 or newer)

  • Experience with MicroStation (V8 or newer)

  • Mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Excel and Word

  • Experience filling the role of substation designer for several projects occurring concurrently

  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, tracking and organizing many tasks of varying importance and size

  • Proven ability and desire to mentor and help others

  • A strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship

Desired Education/Experience

  • Six (6) to ten (10) or more years of experience in substation design

  • An understanding of substation equipment and its function

  • Familiarity with Raster Design and/or Bentley Descartes

  • Ability to produce applicable drawings from rough sketches, notes, vendor drawings, and such

  • Ability to select non-engineered materials (bus, high voltage switches, cable, insulators)

  • 3D CAD experience

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) experience
