WestRock Company R&D Lab Technician in Richmond, Virginia

The opportunity:

The R&D Technologist reports to the R&D Lab Manager and performs a variety of qualitative and quantitative testing. In this role, you will help with work in support of innovation and customer projects relating to the strategic plan of WestRock business. The technician’s role in the lab is to follow test procedures for projects requested.

Safety is paramount to WestRock and a focus on safe work practices will be required. You will be expected to report safety concerns to management for continuous improvement.

How you will impact WestRock:

  • Be apart of the Materials Test Lab team to perform paper testing for specific applications

  • Learn new test methods to expand materials science and technology innovation capabilities

  • Understand and utilize spreadsheets for data compilation

  • Communicate data analysis to requesters

  • Work together in a team to accomplish larger projects

  • Safely operate and calibrate equipment under supervision

What you need to succeed:

  • High School Degree required; Associates Degree and/or training a science or engineering discipline preferred

  • 0-2+ years' experience

  • Lab testing and/or manufacturing experience preferred

  • Paper and packaging industry experience is preferred

  • Knowledge of papermaking and paperboard products preferred

  • Ability to function independently with a high degree of initiative

  • Strong teamwork skills, including ability to contribute to cross functional teams

  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written

  • High degree of mechanical aptitude and technical curiosity

  • Ability to contribute in a lab, pilot plant and production environment

  • Basic computer skills to include proficiency with spreadsheets

  • Ability to lift and carry samples routinely weighing 50 pounds

  • Ability to travel 10%
