Appalachian Conservation Corps:
Our Individual Placement program works to connect young people to conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, DC, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. ACC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation organizations.
Individual Placements gain hands-on experience at their placement site, and ACC supports them through their term, as well as provides a variety of benefits to help them succeed in achieving their career goals. ACC welcomes national applicants, but also emphasizes the engagement of local individuals who represent the communities in which they serve.
Placement Site:
Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site in Richmond, Virginia, commemorates the life of Maggie L. Walker, a progressive and talented African American Woman . Maggie Lena Walker devoted her life to civil rights advancement, economic empowerment, and educational opportunities for Jim Crow-era African Americans and women. As a bank president, newspaper editor, and fraternal leader, Walker served as an inspiration of pride and progress. Today, Walker’s home is preserved as part of the site and as a tribute to her enduring legacy of vision, courage, and determination.
Position Summary:
Maggie L. Walker , a National Park Service Historic Site, in part n ership with Appalachian Conservation Corps, is seeking a year-long Community Outreach Intern to engage community members of all ages, ensuring the legacy of Maggie Walker continues . This position is great for a recent graduate of history, communications or a similar field who is interested in gaining valuable experience.
The member will work directly with the Interpretive and Education team at Maggie L. Walker to provide e ducation and outreach to communities around the site which is located i n the heart of the City of Richmond . There will be an opportunity for the candidate to work with othe r park program areas to support preservation efforts and historical documentation . This position would focus on community outreach with an emphasis on career development, education, overall awareness of NPS an d Maggie Walker National Historic Site.
Some of the duties would include:
Represent the National Park Service and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site at special events .
Attend career events at local schools.
Work with education staff to provide educational programs for area youth.
Work directly with park staff to develop content (digital and physical) to be used in outreach, education, and preservation efforts.
Key Skills to be achieved :
Public speaking and engagement with a wide range of audiences
Desktop publishing and interpretive/creative writing
Working as part of N ational P ark S ervice team to engage community
Specialized skills related to Preservation and interpretation of a National Park Service sit e.
This position will be mostly in person with some remote work opportunities . Housing is NOT provided for this position. Applicants local to the Richmond area are preferred.

$ 8 00/week ($ 600 /stipend + $ 200 / additional benefit ) paid bi-weekly

General Qualifications:
To qualify for this AmeriCorps position, you must be between the ages of 21 and 30, and a US citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.
Possess a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education ( bachelor's degree ) or background in History, Education, Communications, Community Outreach, etc.
Public speaking experience
