Project Overview:

Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Do you have a passion for helping protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest? We want you on our team!

Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year-round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50-mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three-hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.

Job Summary:

In this role you will be responsible for ensuring that utility and process systems are designed to required codes and standards and established design criteria. You will assist with delivering challenging design basis documents such as calculations, drawings, and reports, as well as developing required procurement documents such as specifications and material requisitions that will be used in the equipment procurement process. Your leadership will look to you to provide guidance to junior engineers and develop innovative solutions to technical challenges while still ensuring that the unique and complex requirements of the task are met. Additionally, you will provide input to help track the progress of deliverables to ensure that they meet schedule requirements.

This position is a full-time role located in the Richland, Washington project office, and works a 9/80 schedule, offering every other Friday off. #LI-TN1

Major Responsibilities:

  • Designing the fluid and gas systems in the WTP process facilities.

  • Responsible for assisting with discipline work process execution in a technically adequate manner and in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standards.

  • Preparing Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), technical reports, studies, design documentation, calculations using engineering software, and specifications for complex mechanical equipment for the waste treatment process and supporting systems.

  • Interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design.

  • Mentoring junior engineers.

  • Coordinate closely with other technical disciplines in planning and executing work as an integrated team.

  • Complete assigned engineering tasks within budget/schedule.

  • Support and implement the Nuclear Safety Quality Culture in day-to-day work activities.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Level 1: BS degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college with 5-8 years of progressive related experience. In lieu of education, 9-12 years of progressive related experience is acceptable.

  • Level 2: BS degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college with 8-10 years of progressive related experience. In lieu of education, 12-14 years of progressive related experience is acceptable.

  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.

  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge)

  • Must possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires extensive technical knowledge and understanding of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and materials, applications of computer software to engineering problems to ensure the design is cost effective, in accordance with applicable safety, health, environmental regulations, customer requirements and engineering codes and standards.

  • Must have working knowledge of Bechtel Engineering procedures and BPS.

  • Nuclear experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000.

  • Excellent listening, oral and written communication, planning and organizational skills are essential.

  • Related experience includes but is not limited to experience in performing calculations and design, including documentation, related to hydraulics, equipment sizing, and overall system design for waste processing, nuclear, refinery, power, or chemical process facilities.

  • Experience in fluid system design in processing facilities, DOE facilities, or DOD facilities preferred.

  • Professional Registration in Mechanical, Nuclear or Chemical Engineering.

  • Knowledge of Bechtel corporate guides and standards.
