Battelle Memorial Institute Software Engineer III in Reston, Virginia

As a Software Developer at Battelle you will spend your day designing, coding, and testing software. Our projects are non-standard, highly customized, and will push you to new levels as a software developer. Most of our software is developed in C/C++ and runs on embedded systems.

We are a not for profit 501c3, which means that we invest in our employees and ideas. We fund internal research and development ideas, we have paid training budgets, and we have unlimited snacks and coffee. Our work environment is t-shirt/jeans, flexible hours, and once a month we will play together on a CTF.

This position is located in Reston, VA .


Performs advanced software engineering research and analysis. Conducts quality control review, data reporting, and writes/reviews technical documents.

Designs, develops, documents, tests, and debugs new and existing software systems, hardware/software interfaces, and/or applications according to industry established software engineering principals and best practices. Works collaboratively within a team to execute the full system development lifecycle, including analyzing user needs to determine technical requirements; developing technical specifications based on conceptual design and requirements; developing well‐crafted and documented source code; integrating hardware using software; automating manual tasks; and consulting with the end users to prototype, configure, refine, test, and debug programs or systems. Identifies and evaluates new technologies or methods for implementation and continuous improvement.


  • C/C++ development that supports critical customer missions

  • Applying understanding of software development to the analysis of compiled custom operating systems by learning reverse engineering principles.

  • Software development when good workflows, processes, and environments exist.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, information systems or applicable engineering field and six (5) years of experience in software development or computer science

  • Minimum six (5) years of experience programming in Assembly, C, C++, and Python

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience developing UNIX applications, OR five (5) years combined Windows/UNIX experience

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience with programming cyber tools and techniques

  • Ability to debug and troubleshoot software

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in network sockets programming, packet-level understanding of IP, TCP, and application-level protocols

  • Minimum two (2) year of experience programming device drivers in UNIX variants.

  • Familiarity with OS runtime linker/loader, object file formats (e.g. PE, COFF, ELF) and multi-threading

  • Experience with software version control tools (i.e. Git, Subversion, CVS, etc.)

  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written

  • Ability to work individually and in small fast paced team environments

  • Passion and drive to constantly improve your skill set

  • Must be US Citizen


  • Professional experience in the development of firmware/software for embedded systems

  • Active Top Secret/SCI Clearance


  • Learn (tuition assistance, paid training) and teach (get published, speak at a conference)
