Classification Description Summary

Under direction, performs a full range of graphic design and printing reproduction duties; designs and develops publication quality materials using industry standard graphics software; utilizes a variety of reprographics equipment in order to provide effective document reproduction services; and provides effective customer service at assigned counter area.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Perform the full range of graphic design duties including art direction, creative direction, design, pre-press production, post production, quality control, and printing reproduction for all requested publications.

Organize graphic arts projects; design and develop publication quality materials; effectively write and edit existing publications; design layouts for brochures, newsletters, forms, business cards, reports, leaflets, books, digital layouts, digital advertisements, rack cards, magnets, t-shirts, logos, flags, banners, newspaper ads, construction signs, PowerPoint presentations and other publications utilizing industry standard graphics software taking into account style, arrangement, color, technique, and effect; prioritize job overflow and delegate job placement to appropriate equipment and personnel.

Consult with and provide technical advice and training to staff, peers, and others regarding graphic services.

Ensure client satisfaction with requested job; provide client with digital or printed proof before mass production.

Estimate necessary quantity of time, materials, and personnel for the production of large jobs; determine if job is to be completed in-house verses outsourced; if out-sourcing, acquire vendor bids.

Operate a variety of reprographics equipment including computer, printers/copiers, paper cutter, staplers and digital cameras.

Perform quality control of all printed material to maintain a standard appearance and format; maintain standard appearance and format of the City's logo including proportion, placement, color accuracy, and digital integrity on the web and collateral.

Keep current with job skills relating to graphic arts software and state-of-the-art production techniques; research, update, acquire, and install new versions of software or plug-ins and develop cross application templates with existing software.

Maintain various files and records; maintain work log of all jobs completed.

Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

Graphic design techniques including typography, balance, unity, special relationships, visual dynamics, rhythm, and color theory.

Principles and techniques of copy preparation, composition, contrast and layout.

Industry standard computer graphics software (Adobe).

Pre-press, post press and printing operations, limitations and capabilities of printing equipment, and basic printing techniques including four color process, spot colors, full bleeds, color separations, and related techniques.

Various digital file formats and their appropriate usage.

Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.

Principles and procedures of record keeping and filing.

Principles and practices of customer service.

Principles and practices of inventory control.

English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Ability to:

Design and create effective layouts by applying graphic design techniques to create a consistent, quality, and professional appearance to all publication media.

Utilize computerized, multi-platform, industry standard, desktop publishing, page layout, drawing, and image manipulation software; work simultaneously within multiple graphic design software in an efficient manner to produce a variety of publication media.

Produce materials and documents using a variety of reprographics equipment and according to established specifications.

Operate office equipment including computers digital cameras and supporting software applications.

Adapt to changing technologies and learn functionality of new equipment and systems.

Consult with clients and provide technical assistance regarding reprographics and art design capabilities and limitations.

Clean and maintain reprographics equipment.

Match tints and shades through color matching chart.

Comprehend, interpret, and evaluate relevant information from various types of source materials.

Edit rough or final copy for form, accuracy, and clarity.

Establish effective review and control procedures.

Maintain an accurate inventory of reprographics supplies.

Estimate time and materials needed for printing jobs.

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Plan and organize work to meet changing priorities and deadlines.

Respond to requests from City staff and employees.

Work cooperatively with other departments, City officials, and outside agencies.

Meet critical deadlines while working with frequent interruptions.

Work in a team based environment to achieve common goals.

Coordinate multiple projects and complex tasks simultaneously.

Meet the physical requirements to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by college level course work in graphic design, visual communications, computer graphics, or a related field.

Experience:

Three years of experience in the development of graphic materials for visual communication.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and print shop setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office and reprographic equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to verbally communicate to exchange information; to see in the normal visual range with or without correction; to possess visual acuity for preparation and design of documents; and the ability to distinguish color.
