Burning Man DPW Construction Lead in Reno, Nevada

JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Construction Lead will act as a lead carpenter and team lead on one of the DPW construction crews. Under supervision of a crew Manager, they will lead a small team to build, install, and strike DPW assets and structures at one of our construction sites to include Artery, First Camp, Arctica, Center Camp, or the Depot. Additionally, they will communicate and collaborate with BRC Operations staff as needed to ensure that the construction of the Assets meets the timeline and operational needs.

    This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: 

  • From July - September : Full-Time Non-Exempt , based Black Rock City, Nevada .

    DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Operations (75%)

  • Act as primary carpenter and team lead for the construction, installation, and strike of  one of the DPW construction sites as assigned by the DPW Project Manager.

  • Support a timely construction schedule.

  • Follow approved designs for the construction of the site, collaborating to adapt and redesign as necessary.

  • Act as a resource to BRC Operations providing structure dimensions, general installation guidance, fabrication support, and installation problem solving.

  • Contribute to the general construction of the assigned DPW site.

  • Review necessary materials, lumber, and hardware required to complete builds and repairs and communicate those needs to management

  • Maintain common work spaces; support a tidy worksite, ensuring that tools and equipment are sorted and securely stored at the end of each day.

  • Conduct structural inspections daily and after weather events to maintain sound structures in safe condition.

  • Provide feedback and input to the relevant DPW Construction Manager to support efficient and safe conditions for the crew and worksite.

  • Follow and encourage best practices and the use of necessary OSHA approved safety equipment.

    Personnel  (10%)

  • Serve as a mentor, positive role model, and team leader guiding people as they work, identifying the best people for the job, instructing and sharing skills as necessary.

  • Effectively manage own time, individuals, and the efforts of the team as a whole to create an environment of collaboration and safety in the crew.

  • As needed, train and demonstrate technical skills to apprentice crew members for specific projects with gentle and encouraging constructive feedback.

  • Share all personnel concerns with crew management.

    Documentation (10%)

  • Commit to improving and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for this role.

  • Document processes including photo and video content for supporting educational, training and communications purposes; Create supporting documentation for training as requested.

  • Maintain consistent organization and tidiness in the work environment and in the handling of important information (ie, tracking inventory tools and materials, crew data, goals and timelines, payroll, etc.)

  • Prepare post-event written feedback for DPW Management describing the successes of the season, areas in need of improvement and suggestions for improved efficiency; Submit an end-of-season EMBER Report.

  • Take responsibility to ensure that all new and updated documentation meets the standards as outlined by management.

    Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.

  • Adjust workflow to support changing safety protocols as directed.

  • Participate in Meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.

  • Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.

  • Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

    LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.

  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.

  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.

  • Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

      Required

  • Knowledge of general construction practices and/or structural engineering.

  • Working knowledge of and experience with power tools including: table saw, skilsaw, miter saw, jigsaw, and angle grinder.

  • Experience maintaining clean and organized common workspaces.

  • Capable of climbing on ladders and carrying at least 60 pounds.

  • Motivated, organized and able to take initiative.

  • Ability to work safely with awareness and use clear communication in a production shop environment.

  • Time management skills: able to effectively manage own time, the time of individual team members, and the efforts of the team as a whole.

  • Experience leading construction or site crews at Burning Man or in other festival environments; familiarity with event-based production work.

  • Working knowledge of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive) and Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to lead by example, motivate teams; excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.

  • Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada

    Preferred 

  • Experience as a DPW Crew member.

  • Working knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.

  • OSHA 30 hour Construction & General Industry Certification.

  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture

    REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record

     

    COMPENSATION

    Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From July - September is $16.00 to $18.00 per hour .

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Off-playa:   Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.

  • On-playa:   This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
