Responsibilities
OSP partners with specialty physician groups, through MSOs to support their migration into value-based healthcare as part of the OptumCare team. OSP partners to provide practice management and clinical performance support, referral and payer alignment, data analytics, and strategic capital while the practices themselves provide physician leadership, market knowledge and clinical excellence to create market-leading specialty care delivery systems. OSP is responsible for delivering high-value specialty care networks that overlay and integrate with SCA Health, OptumCare Care Delivery Organizations (CDOs), and other OptumCare partners.
Role Description:
Reporting to the VP of MSO Operations, this position will have responsibility to centralize the day-to-day physician compensation calculation function. This Director level position will require a deep understanding of developing workflows (people, process, and technology) required to successfully administer the monthly calculation of physician compensation. To be successful, routine interaction across multiple lanes (finance, accounting, operations, compliance, and legal) is a must with the main customers of this service being the finance and operations lanes. This position on a fast growing team will have exposure to SCAH leadership and stakeholders at Optum Health.
Responsibility Description:
To be a successful candidate, the candidate will need to have familiarity with multiple compensation models (private practice, wRVUs, percent of collections, compensation pools, and Earnings Before Physician Compensation (EPBC)). This role will be responsible for centralizing the physician compensation calculations and standardizing the workflow process for all relevant OSP partnerships. This will require the following:
Initial Focus
Learning and becoming an expert on the legal structure and economic model of each partnership
Assess the current state process and tools utilized
Propose a roadmap to centralize the compensation administration and calculation functions, including but not limited to the following:
Contract Management – Work with legal and compliance to ensure contracts are managed appropriately within the contract management system
Calculations – Assess the ability to centralize compensation calculation functions across practice types (independent, employed) and need for additional resources and automation tools
Review and Approval – Work with compliance, legal, IT, and enterprise services to standardize the approval workflow utilizing workflow automation tools as much as is possible
FMV Process – Help standardize the FMV process with the compensation function; learn and guide stakeholders through the parent company compensation/FMV approval process
Hire, onboard, and mentor teammates as needed
Work with operations and finance lanes to build a reporting cadence to ensure that they understand the monthly results and key drivers of those results
Routine Responsibilities
Manage team and process to effectively and efficiently complete the monthly, quarterly, and annual requirements needed to support the physician compensation function
Ensure that all payments made adhere to contracts
Function as a subject matter expert to assist with creation of new compensation plans and assess the compensation plans of target company during the due diligence process
Provide input to finance for quarterly forecasting and annual budgeting process
Liaise between department lanes, physicians, and partnerships ensuring all questions are answered in a timely manner
Develop an onboarding and training program for finance and operations teammates
Provide physician compensation diligence support for potential acquisitions
Qualifications
An undergraduate or graduate degree in finance, accounting, economics, healthcare administration or other business-related degree
A minimum of 7 years of related experience
A minimum of 3 years managing a team
Experience with large multisite and multimarket medical groups is required
Working knowledge of regulatory landscape related to physician compensation
Ability to collaborate with other departments and organizations
Working knowledge of the latest technology solutions
Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate with physicians
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft office suite (Excel, Access, PowerBI) is a must, experience with SQL is a bonus
Motivation to achieve individual and team goals, must be able to work independently and in a team environment
Ability to function both as high-level executive and in the weeds in a start-up-like environment
Travel requirements: minimal travel is required in this role, most travel will be for internal meetings (estimate about 10%)
Experience working with Aprima, NextGen, EPIC, Athena, Modernizing Medicine, and/or AllScripts practice management systems highly desired
