Lilly Sr. Director - Counsel - Health, Safety, & Environmental in Remote, Indiana

The Sr. Director - Counsel - Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) provides compliance advice and counsel, due diligence and other support for mergers and acquisitions and chemical regulatory advice and counsel. The position works with global, regional and US site-based HSE subject matter experts to support manufacturing, research and sales operations and consults with and advises senior management on HSE matters. This position reports to the Vice President and Assistant General Counsel, International and HSE, Regulatory Legal Team.

Key Responsibilities:

Health, Safety and Environmental Counseling

  • Advise corporate HSE and U.S. manufacturing and research sites on key U.S. regulatory aspects, including air, water, hazardous waste and occupational safety regulatory compliance and assist with global policy development and implementation regarding auditing and conformance to internal standards

  • Counsel global HSE program leaders and management on new HSE laws and regulations with significant global operational impact, including chemical management and registration regulations in the US, Europe and China, such as TSCA and REACh

Due Diligence and Support of Business Development Activities

  • Provide counsel on HSE aspects of due diligence and support transition activities for newly acquired or divested facilities. This includes contributing to due diligence reviews and advising the HSE organization on strategies for oversight and integration of new acquisitions.

Aspects of Third Party Partner Relationships

  • Provide guidance regarding appropriate HSE contractual language for external partner manufacturing and research organizations

  • Evaluation of external party assessments

  • Advise regarding structure and governance of HSE oversight of external partners

Legal input into global HSE and manufacturing strategy and other strategic HSE initiatives

Contribute legal insights into environmental aspects of corporate sustainability initiatives.

  • Partner with the sustainability office and business subject matter experts to support their understanding of evolving regulation; support translation of environmental regulatory requirements into measurable actions and outcomes.

  • Collaborate with the sustainability office and corporate secretary office to review third-party sustainability questionnaires, regulatory reporting, and similar public disclosures.

Basic Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited U.S. law school is required.

  • 7 or more years of experience as an attorney counseling in environmental, health and safety matters

Preferences

  • Experience working across environmental media (e.g., air, water, and waste) and with legislation and regulations globally.

  • Demonstrated ability to direct and work effectively with outside counsel in multiple jurisdictions.

  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills ; ability to deliver legal advice to customers in a clear, concise manner.

  • Proven track record of interpreting and applying standards from multiple jurisdictions and legal systems to different situations by understanding customer needs and application of sound problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with others and influence without direct authority across multiple operational and functional areas.

Additional Information

Position may located in Indianapolis, IN at our corporate center or emote with periodic travel to the global headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. The ability to travel is required.

Lilly currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from between $168,000 – $246,400 and will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance). In addition, Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees, including eligibility to participate in a company-sponsored 401(k); pension; vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities).Of course, the compensation described above is subject to change and could be higher or lower than the range described above.
