Job Summary:

Serves as a water & wastewater technician. Responsible for maintenance, installation, service, and repair of all facilities relative to the collection, treatment and distribution of drinking water, industrial water, wastewater, and swimming pools on Redstone Arsenal. Performs job duties related to the performance of preventive maintenance and major repairs on pumps, pressure reducing valves, surge valves, and PIV valves. Installs new valves, meters, and pumps as required. Work involves most of the following: planning and laying out work; interpreting blueprints, maps, or other specifications. Uses a variety of hand tools and rigging equipment and parts to complete the job. Maintains in good working order equipment and tools. Prepares written specifications for repairs or for the production of parts ordered from machine shops. Installs and PM’s sump pumps in the distribution system. PM’s flow tests and paint fire hydrants. Other duties as assigned. May be required to work overtime.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs maintenance, serving, and repair of water and wastewater systems equipment such as pumps, motors, piping, valves, and control systems.

  • Troubleshoots equipment to determine the cause and extent of malfunctions.

  • Disassembles or partly disassembles equipment and replaces defective components.

  • Reassembles and reinstalls to return to fully operational status.

  • Replaces entire assemblies when needed, adapting fittings, piping, and control systems to accommodate replacement equipment.

  • Completes all jobs related to written records and forms.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Accountable For:

  • The proper use of tools and equipment commonly used in the mechanic field.

  • Completing all mandated training requirements per government and management directives.

  • Timely and cost-effective performance of duties.

  • Timely completion and accuracy of all departmental work.

  • Dealing with a variety of people in a professional courteous manner in diversified situations.

  • Adherence to established company safety policies and good industrial and office safety practices.

  • Compliance with company standard operating procedures and personnel policies and procedures.

  • Having the ability to work well under pressure.

  • Ensures compliance with all laws and regulations governing water and wastewater treatment and distribution systems.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires minimum three (3) years of experience performing maintenance and repair of industrial equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, and control systems and distribution systems that are found in water treatment plans.

  • Must have and maintain a valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving record pertinent to the position.

  • Ability to successfully pass any background checks and/or drug testing required on the contract.

  • MUST HAVE ADEM Grade I Water certification.

  • Must be able to lift of 50 pounds.

  • Requires working while exposed to inclement weather.

  • Must meet and maintain company physical and security requirements, including respirator qualification, and clearance eligibility when required.

  • Knowledge of use of specialized tools to perform the necessary repair functions.

  • Must be willing and able to work in confined spaces.

Physical Demands:

  • Lifts, carries, and handles equipment up to 50 pounds unassisted and over 50 pounds with assistance.

  • Works from ladders, scaffolding platforms, or cramped areas where equipment, parts, or tools are hard to reach.

  • Work requires frequent stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions for long periods.

  • Works indoors and outdoors on elevated structures and in cramped areas.

  • Subject to discomfort from face masks or other protective devices when there is a possibility of exposure to chemicals, noxious gases, fumes, or acids.

  • Subject to possible burns from chemicals. Works near moving parts of equipment and machinery, energized electrical circuits, sharp metal edges, loud noises, and fumes which could cause cuts, burns, and respiratory ailments.

  • May be subject to sudden and frequent temperature changes. Required to wear safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, ear protection, and hard hats.
